Help! DD won't drink milk at all & I'm stressed beyond belief

DD is 29 weeks tomorrow, and has just moved to 3 'meals' a day(I'm puree led.

Problem is she flatly refuses to drink formula, and is having nowhere near the amount required. She was b/f and has always been fussy since moving to ff but now is giving up completely. I try and hide it in her food but can only get an oz or so in otherwise its like water. Also add lots of cheese to stuff, and she has yogurt after nearly every meal as I am so paranoid about this issue.

Does anyone know how many oz's those little yogurts are equal to? Should I be offering Vitamin drops? Don't want to ring HV as she is useless. I'm also paranoiud she will dehydrate. i offer water throughout the day but she only sips on it.

So far nappies are fine and she is happy. but as a first time mum i'm scared she's going to wilt away...I'd say she drinks average of 8-12 ozs a day.

Sorry is this is all muddled!

Is it fluids you're worried about or calcium?
My dd1 never drank formula or milk but was breastfed throughout weaning and beyond. i did used to mix a small amount of soya-based formula powder into her purees sometimes for flavour more than anything. She drank water from a sippy cup when she was thirsty. i'd say if your dd is wetting her nappies she's not dehydrated. There's quite a lot of fluid in purees. And so long as she's getting a variety of carbs, fruit, vegs and fats then she should be ok. Im not an expert tho, just passing on what i did with dd1 who is a big, strong, healthy 3.5 yo girl now. maybe you could get hold of some books that would give you ideas for balanced puree meals, or ask a different HV/pediatrician?

No help here, as I'm bf and dd is milk intolerant, so no idea how to hide it in food, but just wanted to stress that you shouldn't follow malaleche's lead by adding soya formula - soya milk is not suitable for babies under 2.

Thanks for you replies am worried about both calcium and her dehydrating. DH says she is happy and is still doing regular wet/dirty nappies so not to worry. You'd think by now I should just accept that no baby is text book but I always seem to find something to worry about!!!

If you're worried about calcium make sure she has plenty cheeses & broccoli in her purees.

Making a cheese sauce uses a lot more milk than just adding it to food too.

my dd went onto follow on milk after stopping b/f at 15 mths, she needed the extra calories that it could give her over cows milk - only reason we used follow on.

The only brand she would drink was Hipp organic that we made up fresh.
Another advocate of cheese sauce here
once they love it you can hide anything in it

She does seem to love cheese...as do I!!! Thanks again, might give the follow on milk a thought

i am no expert here, but i do have 2 ds 5 and 3. the youngest i very clearly remember wouldn't drink formula either. We just stuck with it, kept offering, then one day out of the blue, hey presto. Until that point, we did just as you are now, yogurt, milk in food, cheese. Whenever we made the switch to cows milk (12mths i think) we went through the same thing all over again. Now, he won't be without milk. Maybe someone will come up with some better advise though. Good luck, and don't worry.

malaleche · 08/03/2007 11:39

There is calcium in all sorts of foods, the trick is combining foods that allow maximum absorbtion of whatever vit or mineral you're worried about, and I don't want to start an argument here but cow's milk is not the best source of calcium. However my dd1 does eat cheese and yoghurt and has cows milk in cereal, tho she prefers the taste of soya if given a choice. The soya based formula I used was suitable from birth and I used very little of it. When I did introduce cow's milk products at 10 months she developed ezcema...now cleared up at 3.5 yrs.
I think the key in nutrition is variety. But I also try not to accept everything I'm told is good for me or my kids - remember they're trying to sell you something!

My ds is 9 mo, has three meals a day and drinks about 12 oz of milk. And he's a big lad too. I give him yoghurts, cheese sauces, loads of cheese grated into his puree and use formula to slacken a stiff puree.
