Can anyone recommend jars of baby food that taste like food?

Hi all

I'm struggling to find instant baby food that my 10 month old twins will eat. Can anyone recommend one of the brands? I've tried a couple from Hipp organic but it was disgusting - like gelatinous goo, no wonder they turned their noses up! Would really appreciate a recommendation before I buy something similar.

I've made all their food to date but we're going on holiday soon and will have limited cooking facilities so I need to take some instant stuff. Cheers for the help.

I don't think any jars taste like real food, they are all bland and have that same kind of processed taste to them. Not that I've tried loads!! But I did use jars for my twins (DD2 & DS3) until they were about 10mths.

Having only given my DD1 home cooked food, she would never take a jar of food in an emergency etc, and have many friends with similar experiences. My twins prefered the Hipp Org meaty ones like spag bol and chicken and rice. Maybe you can mix some jars in with your own food to get them used to it before you go? Like the reverse of coming off jars!!

Are you going far? Is there a freezer? We went to Cornwall and Ireland with DD1 and I took her food ready frozen in a cold bag, but not too good if your going a long way!!

Can't they just have some of what you have?

no such thing imho

when i was being lazy i used to give ds babylicious

BigCookLittleCook · 07/03/2007 13:56

They all taste horrid but my DS happily ate Hipp Organic when we were on hols when he was 8 months old. He's a bit picky on which ones he will eat though. Think spagbol is the only one that tastes even slightly like normal food. Plum baby stuff is nice, but only available in fruit or veg flavours, no protein (I dont think). Saying that, Hipp Org (and others) have so little actual meat or fish in them it doesn't really make a difference.

I use Earths Best must admit to putting the pear on vanilla ice cream and then scoffing once DS has gone to bed

Cow and Gate have a new brand out called Baby Balance and DS does like these and they are quite tasty!

most baby food is much of a muchness....can they eat off your plate for your hols?

if not, then maybe take a few jars with you and but stuff there...as transporting lots of jars is heavy and takes up space?

if you are going somewhere hot, you might find, they eat very little and drink loads more milk....

ds would only eat certain ones- they are all vile imo. i think it was hipp organic- cottage pie, tomato and courgette fusili twists, spag bol and that was about it.

Just let them eat bread/toast, yogurt and fruit for the holiday.

CanSleepWeirdShifts · 07/03/2007 14:08

Since they are all heated to about a zillion degrees (can you tell I don't know the actual temp ) in the jars in order to extend the shelf life they are all gelatinous uniform tasting goo.

Give them some of what you're having and take a bag of pasta for emergencies - I assume that by 'limited cooking facilities' you mean you will at least have access to a heat source and a saucepan?

DS likes Boots organic jars, esp. any of the tomato + pasta ones.

glamourbadger · 07/03/2007 14:16

Thanks for all the speedy replies! Thought it might be the case that they all taste the same. They'll have to live off bits from my plate.

Gone are the days when I used to take a bikini and a sarong on holiday - now I need a saucepan, some clanking jars and a giant bag of pasta .

you really don't have to take all that. Surely you can buy pasta there, or give them your food. I've never taken food especially for 11 month old ds on holiday, even when we took him to Africa.

JoshandJamie · 07/03/2007 14:44

Glamourb - where are you going on holiday - uk or abroad and will there be freezer facilities there? if so, speak to BAbylicious. They do home delivery and also delivery to holiday destinations in the UK - but you'll need to have someone sign for it and make sure it can go in a freezer.

It tastes like home made food and has no rubbish in it.

At 10 months they don't need jars. Just give them sandwiches or order in restaurant their own meals. You can mash with a fork if they still need soft food (soups are good, with bread dipped in). They could prob manage chips at least

I wouldn't waste your money on jars

NoBiggy · 07/03/2007 21:19

When we went abroad with an 11 month old we took some snack-type things. A sandwich for the plane, some raisins, a ziplock bag of cheerios, packet of rice cakes, there was probably some breadsticks. Breakfast time she'd happily have bread, fruit or yogurt. Eating out we'd have in mind what she could eat when we ordered, so omelettes, salad, pasta with a sauce she'd like, dahl in an indian, noodles and stir fried veg in a chinese. If we ordered soup we asked for a teacup and spoon and decanted a portion for her.

It all went rather well, and if we drew a blank at a restaurant we had the little snack bag with us, and that's just one meal gone wrong in the day so doesn't really matter.

glamourbadger · 08/03/2007 13:26

Thanks for all the wise words. We mums of twins don't get out much in the first year - this will be our proper first holiday! Great ideas about ordering in restaurants, it never occured to me to order soup or an omelette for them but makes sense.
