Hello, i wanted to check if cooked pasta is ok to give my 6 month ds. The texture seems tougher and chewy, than friut and veg, and im not sure if i should cut it in half or just give the whole (penne) pasta.

please cut it in half
could be a choking hazzard

DimpledThighs · 07/03/2007 13:25

overcook it too so it is no way al dente (Italians are shuddering!)

At tescos they do tiny little pasta bows (not in the baby section, but in the normal pasta section) - I give my DS these.

Iklboo · 07/03/2007 13:27

Asda do teeny tiny wholewheat pasta for young un's too. But cook it for much longer than you would for yourself.

Thanks for all your replies....

my DS loves the twists, but drops any other shape at the moment.

FFS hana - you don't need to cut it in half.

As long as you are ok with him having gluten at this point (which is fine normally, but some people choose to wait) then yes, but do cook it well to make it easier to eat. If he finds it too hard still, then you could try him with corn pasta, as that is softer naturally.

Fusilli is generally easier for them to pick up than penne at this age though.

hana · 07/03/2007 14:16

why be so aggressive with me cantsleepweird shifts? that's just unnecessary
the op asked for opinons so I gave mine......it's just not worth the risk in my opinion

DetentionGrrrl · 07/03/2007 14:17

i see what hana is saying- but then everything is pretty much a choking hazzard. My DS only had trouble keeping hold of penne, not trouble actually eating it IYKWIM.

Sorry, I was a bit aggressive , but I get a bit tired of people talking rubbish about weaning! Have you never heard of blw though hana - there are lots of us out there giving huge chunks of finger food right from 6 months, and our babies don't choke.

hana · 07/03/2007 14:23

thank you cantsleep
well yes I have heard of it, I"ve done sim with my first 2 and dd3 is almost 6 months. But at 6 months ( and this is my opinon) I'm not going to be giving penne to my baby, I'll wait til she's a bit older. And yes, everything is a potential choking hazzard so whatever I can do to minimize risk, I"ll do it.

ScottishThistle · 07/03/2007 14:25

I give pasta big enough so the child can hold it, so no don't cut it.

Many foods can be seen as a choking hazard, make sure you know how to deal with a choking child & it won't be a problem.

AitchTwoOh · 07/03/2007 14:32

actually i'd have thought that halved pieces of penne would be more of a choking hazard than a bitten off bit of the tube. just because it's flappier and more likely to get stuck to the roof of the baby's mouth. dd had difficulty with penne for a while, definitely, but fusilli were great.

littleducks · 07/03/2007 14:37

agree with aitch and scottish thistle, my dd eats pasta all shapes and sizes (but didnt really take to it that young as she likes the sauce best and i used to give plain pasta at 6 months)

i think as a rule of thumb bigger is better when it comes to finger food

i only go out of my way to cut grapes
