AITCH AND DIZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLW HELP!

Right today I have had to resign myself to the fact that I have to do BLW for no other reason than thats what ds wants
He will not be fed off a spoon, he just clamps his mouth shut and turns his head. So to me thats a good signal that he doesn't want it.

My concern is that he's 6 months now and with the bits of BLW I have tried, its not very successful. Obviously I'm not expecting him to eat all of the food but just something but atm he has none of it.
He's very happy shoving it in his mouth and chomping on it but it all seems to come out again.
Is this quite normal and ok to carry on with? Will he eventually get enough food in that he needs?

So far I have tried him with Brocoli, Carrot, Chicken, Mango, Avocado and cucumber.
I'm not pancking, honest

oi feathers! how's it been today?

NbgsYellowFeathers · 25/02/2007 18:36

Hallo!

Well I gave him cheese at lunch and he loved it. Actually ate that too!
Atm he just devouring a banana. I gave him half of one and it kept slipping out of his hand so I've cut them into slices but it doesnt seem to have helped

I'm certain now though, this is the right thing for him.

great! dd finds bananas easiest sliced once down the middle then in half. a whole fat banana is a bit much for her little fist. she can do it but it takes AGES, certainly more so when she hadn't mastered using two hands to hold things. otherwise banana on toast is a nice breakfast.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 25/02/2007 18:44

Ahhh yes, that would be a better thing to do and i never thought about putting it on toast.

We went down the BLW route as ds was having none of this spoon-feeding lark either! But it did take a while to get into it. By the time he was 1yo he was eating a wide variety of foods, but not a huge amount, and often wasn't interested in eating at all. Even at nearly 2yo now, he goes through phases of not eating much one day and loads the next. So as long as your ds is getting his usual milk, don't worry about how much food he's getting in. I think it is a good idea to eat with him, maybe even with him sitting on your knee, helping himself to your plate. Or whenever he looks interested in something you're eating, let him have a bite. Just keep offering healthy foods and it's up to him weather he eats it (and he will eventually). The key thing is to RELAX
One of the lovely things about this method of weaning is that you really see your lo learning how to eat and developing preferences for different foods. Good luck

hi there, sorry that i didn't answer before but i was involved in a bit of an altercation a few days ago where someone i've never heard of before told me that they pitied my mental state because i go onto most if not all of the BLW threads and try to help. apparently this makes me a bad person or something and i'm not doing myself any favours...

anyhoo, i swore off the weaning boards but have now seen this pop up on Active Convos for the last few days and have decided that i am being more of a prick by not answering it than i could ever be by doing so.

not that it sounds like you need any help, of course, he sounds like he's having a whale of a time. re the bananas... some people open the banana, half it, then split it into three by putting their finger up the middle. it's weird, you'll suddenly notice for the first time ever that bananas split naturally into three...

what i used to do, however, was chop the banana in half then peel down the skin so that it made a mini-banana and dd didn't have difficulties with holding onto the skin. that stage only lasted a wee while, then dd got more dextrous (weeks rather than months) and now she can grip them fine. good luck, really, you sound like it's going well. and try not to sweat the amounts, it's all about the milk at the moment.

nice to see you aitch

AitchTwoOh · 25/02/2007 19:13

damned if i do, an ill-mannered git if i don't...

NbgsYellowFeathers · 25/02/2007 19:15

Thanks Aitch.
I saw that thread btw
You do right coming back. You've given alot to this site. Dont let one comment stop you posting.

Deep breath and walk past it!

Good idea about the skin too. I'll try both. I know that when I eat them he gets really excited and he did tonight when I was peeling it. Presumably because of the colour.
