Have to tell someone about this one. At M&T's today and got talking to one of the other mum's who had a DD who was very premature anyway I said "what age is she now" she says 6 months so I'm like have you started solids yet? Oh yes she says, she was out hospital and was 7 days past her due date when I started her on solids. I was speechless. She went on to say that she was at hospital with the baby last night and they were asking her about milk intake and she sais she was getting 3 meals a day and they were like but she's only 3 months old corrected weight but the woman said but she is actually 6 months old so she's getting solids. She said the hospital were stupid and knew nothing and that her DD was ready for solids. She said she had weaned her other 2 early as they had milk allergies!

Another friend then went on to say that the baby has breathing problems yet the Mum smokes in the house in front of her so it doesn't surprise me.

Felt a bit when she asked when I had weaned DD2 and I said 6 months, DD2 is a big lump compared to this tiny wee thing.

it's becoming like a competition on who can wean the earliest

or who can ignore the hv and know better!

I used to know someone who fed a baby mashed potatoes and gravy virtually from birth. Cheaper than formula.

PinkTulips · 26/02/2007 16:44

knew a couple that did exactly this.... ds was 3 months early and they started feeding when he was about 4 monrths, so 1 month in adjusted age. he was tiny and couldn't even hold his head up... she was shoveling puyrrees down his throat while hwe lay in his bouncer

PinkTulips · 26/02/2007 16:47

about the car seat thing... the guidlines are 9kg or 9 month whichever is soonest as being in the rear facing seat when they're too big is very dangerous. ds was in a forward facing at 5 months as he's massive and was over 9kgs

edam · 26/02/2007 16:55

Do you remember the case of the baby who died after being weaned on gravy made from granules? Salt poisoning.

Re: car seats, I thought the issue was they shouldn't go forward facing until they can hold their own necks up (and weigh enough). Because if you have to slam on the brakes obviously their heads will be thrown forwards. V dangerous for babies too young to have any neck muscles to mention, IIRC.

Surprised at Bliss advice, seems very outdated.

PinkTulips · 26/02/2007 16:58

well he was able to sit unaided as well so think it was still ok. i checked again with the people in the shop and they agreed with me (and the other seats were more expensive so don't think it was just to make a sale)

don't understand your point about rear-facing if baby is too big = dangerous pinktulips. in sweden children up to 5 ot 6 are rear-facing iirc.

ds's group 0-1 car seat is forward or rear facing (must be rear-facing to start, then a choice after 9kg)

Themis · 26/02/2007 19:36

When I looked at the Bliss advice I checked when it was lasted updated and it said Sept 06 .

Perhaps it is different with prem babies ?

PinkTulips · 27/02/2007 15:02

i meant our rear facing seat specifically tutter, sorry i didn't phrase that well.

in the manual for the seat we use when they're little it says that it cannot properly protect them if the babies head rises above the level of the back of the seat.... which ds's head did.

he has one of those britax ones now that is really curved and cosy and reclines so he can sleep without his head flopping forwards
