Oh dear, oh crap, how worried should I be?

Ds2 aged 10 months has snatched and devoured ds1's pecan nut danish pastry. He is an eczema=-ish baby - is it A and E time or do I need to chill? He seems ok....

are there any nut allergies in your family? If not I would think that he's fine.

colditz · 18/02/2007 12:04

My brother is allergic to nuts

I have medised on standby - apparently it's the most effective antihistimine!

oh blimey, I don't know then! Would a reaction have happened immediately? (the only person I ever knew who had a nut allergy reacted within minutes).

Chandra · 18/02/2007 12:07

Colditz, don't worry, at least not yet!

I remember a doctor telling me that only one in 3 or four children with eczema develop asthma, from those only one in the same proportion would go into developing nut allergies.

A&E would not be able to do much unless your child is having a serious reaction, so I would keep an eye on him. And keep him well away of nuts until he is at least 3 years old (which is the general recommendation not something you have to do because of what he has eaten today).

If you have any other question, please ask

By the way, it's Piriton, not medised, what you should have on hand.

hercules1 · 18/02/2007 12:09

I would give him medised anyway. My db has severe nut allergy so I am always aware of this.

hercules1 · 18/02/2007 12:10

Yes, we always have piriton at home.

Chandra · 18/02/2007 12:11

In fact, I wouldn't give him anything at all unless he is having a reaction. Is he?

colditz · 18/02/2007 12:12

Shit I don't have piriton. None of my kids actually have allergies, AFAIK, I am just aware of them because of the way my brother was.

No, not that I can see. They are usually pretty spectacular, aren't they? My brother used to come up in hives like pidgeon eggs.

It's usually quite a quick reaction. Just keep an eye on him. I suspect he'll be fine

Chandra · 18/02/2007 12:21

I think he will be fine, but I would stress the need to keep him well away of nuts until he is older, with a history of eczema and nut allergy in the family, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you all.
