This is not meant to be contentious. Just genuine interst. If you waited the 6 months was it actually 6 months or 26 weeks. Tia

a couple of days before she got to 26 weeks she grabbed my hand while i was eating a peach, pulled it towards her mouth and ate it. the peach, not the hand.

GhostOfMumsnet · 16/02/2007 22:38

1987 DS1 24 weeks
1989 DS2 22 weeks
1990 DS3 20 weeks
1993 DD1 26 weeks

Official guidelines at that time was 16 weeks however, even as long ago as that, breastfeeding book I used advised 6 months. The research was around even way back then.

TravellingontheClaphamOmnibus · 16/02/2007 22:48

I went to a session on weaning today with HV. She told us that guidelines now say weaning can take place from 17 weeks so long as the baby has not been exclusively breastfeed.

To say I was surprised would be an understatement. She also said there was little nutritional value in breastfeeding after 6 months.

I will not be weaning DS just yet!

sweetkitty · 16/02/2007 22:54

DD1 - 25 weeks
DD2 - 26 weeks

hunkermunker · 17/02/2007 01:07

TTCO, are you going to do anything about it? I really, really strongly believe that that sort of practice should be reported - she's giving advice that is just plain wrong!

welliemum · 17/02/2007 01:35

26 weeks for both (2005 and 2006).

QueenofTwee · 17/02/2007 01:52

26 weeks for dd, but she was born a month early so I'm starting to think, did I do wrong and should I have waited a month longer? I think she might have run the risk of becoming anaemic, though.

QueenofTwee · 17/02/2007 01:53

Although of course by weaning you mean start solids, she is still being breastfed as her main food and I don't intend to stop that until she wants me to......

QueenofTwee · 17/02/2007 01:54

Now at 9 months...

foxabout2pop · 17/02/2007 07:33

DS 4.5 months (2000)
DD 4.5 months (2003)

When they both showed an interest in food

cjs76 · 17/02/2007 07:47

4 months with both ds's ds2 now 6 months got on a lot better but was much bigger than ds1 over 2 lbs at birth now hardly has much milk maybe 3 half bottles a day eats lots of fresh fruit & veg

Blandmum · 17/02/2007 07:53

4 months for both of them, 2000 and 1997 and 4 months was the guide line at the time.

They both took to it immediatly, both used to vomit thei milk massivly fter every feed and the solids stayed down better

lizziemun · 17/02/2007 08:28

At 4 mths but wished i had done BLW as dd has never been interested in food, but followed the advice given.

Evan at 3 she is still difficult to feed.

Thistime i will probaly do blw.

pelvicflawed · 17/02/2007 08:42

17 weeks - but very slowly - veg puree didn't appear until around 21/22 weeks and no protein/wheat until 26 weeks. I hadn'
t found MN then so wasn't clear about the 26 week guide (up till then I though 6 months was 6x 4 weeks ie 24 weeks - confused again!). Miss took the 16-18 week growth spirt as needing to wean. Advice from health professionals slim - I got confused with the 6 mths breast feeding guideline wasn't necessarily the same as weaning (yes I am still on planet earth!!!) and was told that when I went to a talk on weaning at the clinic that though the guideline was 6 mths most people started before then and that was ok as long as it wasn't before 4 mths. If I had found MN things would have been different - am reasonbly - on a good day- intelligent but got completely confused!!! - I know next time.

LucyJu · 17/02/2007 09:10

Dd1 - 2000 - 20 weeks
Dd2 - 2005 - 25 weeks

I believe the guidelines back in 2000 were "4 - 6 months". I also remember the hv telling me that the guidelines had a 2 month spread because "it might well take about 2 months for baby to actually start eating anything". There was talk of a magical "window of opportunity" for weaning, with dire warnings that missing this "window" could mean that, not only would your child never learn to eat normal food, but they would never learn to speak properly, either!

To this day I have visions of mute adults existing on a diet of soup and melted ice-cream.... and all because their mothers missed the "window of opportunity" for weaning...

percypig · 17/02/2007 09:16

2 days before his actual 6 month 'birthday' - as it was the weekend so dh was around during the day. Started with bits of carrot - now he's nearly 11 months and a brilliant eater - go BLW!

FrannyandZooey · 17/02/2007 09:18

I think it was about 23 weeks - I wanted to wait until 6 months but was getting loads of pressure from the HV and, well, everyone, to wean him, as I was struggling with his sleeping at the time.

It made no difference, he was just one of those children who wakes up a lot in the night. He grew out of it eventually.

grouchyoscar · 17/02/2007 09:45

I was exclusivly BFing and at 12 weeks DS was becoming a rather large broach. I started to offer very dilute baby rice mixed with my milk and then progressed to adding pureed fruit to it. By 16 weeks he was on half dilution of rice and at 20 weeks he was on 3 meals a day.

I know, I know, it's not recommended but it worked for us. DS still has a voracious appetite and will try most things. He's a big lad 3stone 3lbs and 125 cm tall at last tally. He's 3.5

staceym11 · 17/02/2007 10:07

dd was weaned at about 8 weeks coz she refused milk so had to mix with baby rice etc to get some milk into her.

ds had some at 6 weeks as would scream for hours, had about 2 days with a little at each feed, then wasnt interested so i stopped, he did the same at 12 weeks, a little each feed then after about 4 days wasn't interested. hes now 15 weeks and no sign of proper weaning, but i have no qualms about doing it if he needs it!!

mears · 17/02/2007 11:29

LucyJu - my HV kept going an at me with DD that I would miss the 'window' and that she would have problems eating solids by starting them as late as 8 months. I just disagreed with her and told her I wasn't doing it

QueenEagle · 17/02/2007 11:34

dd was 12 weeks.

ds1 was 10 weeks

ds2 was 12 weeks

ds3 was around 4 months

ds4 around 4 months too

hercules1 · 17/02/2007 21:06

DS 16 weeks (1996) DD 6 months (2003)
Yes, research was around in 1996 as ds's best friend wasnt weaned until 6 months by his mum who said that she followed research at that time to do at 6 months.

Wallace · 18/02/2007 09:02

lol at pelvicflawed, just shows how confusing all the different advice from different sources can be.

Lucyju - yes ds1 was born in 1999 and dd in 2001 and there was always talk about that "window" wish I had known it was rubbish
