my dd is 6 months in 2 weeks time and has been having a little baby cereal for brekkie and some fruit for lunch for a few weeks now as recommended by the doc.i have been giving her a few teaspoons of each every day for a while now but im not sure when you are supposed to start giving more and how much more? shouldnt i be introducing some savoury foods? i know the milk intake needs to stay the same so thats ok but i dont want to go mad with the solids if shes only getting used to it if you see what i mean.......and is it better to make your own foods rather than using jars???

Certainly better to make your own, and less trouble as you can just boil a little more of whatever veg you are having eg potato (root veg are good to start on) and mash/puree it for dd, perhaps adding some of her usual milk. As to quantity, give the milk feed first and then see how much solid food she wants. You'll know when she's had enough.

ps forgot to say, don't add any salt for dd. You probably knew that, didn't you.

I used to keep offering until he turned his head away or whacked the spoon away. Ds quite quickly went from a little bit of babyrice at lunch to 3 meals a day. I think if you've left it to 6 months you can increase amounts and types of food fairly quickly.

I always gave milk first, followed by solids so that the focus remained on the milk. I make my own food unless I'm going out for lunch or away for a weekend and then I use jars so that I don't need to worry about keeping food safely chilled. He's not keen on the stuff in jars though

Found that once dd hit the 6mth mark her meal size really increased. 8mths now and has 3 meals a day and two courses at each sitting!!!! And still has milk .

I started at 25 weeks and now she is 32 weeks.

Started on lunch for about 2 weeks, then breakfast for about 2 weeks then included dinner as well. She has a dinner and pudding at lunch and evening. I only used the baby rice for the first few weeks with fruit and veg but sometimes add a bit for texture if I need to.

For the first 3 weeks it was solely fruit and veg then moved onto meals such as beef or chicken casserole or cod/carrot/orange thingy! MOst days she will have a veg based one meal and meat/fish for the other.

I also gave her custard or semolina with fruit from about 28 weeks - use semolina or custard powder but don't add any sugar - then add puree apple, peach, raspberry, strawberry etc.

Definatley better to make your own in my opinion - have you ever tasted jar food? I think its revolting and why is it always the same colour? The texture is vile on some of them too, like the heinz banana pudding (got a freebie in a cafe once but I wouldn't eat it let alone give it to my baby).

It can take up a bit of time but if you make several varietys of dinners/puddings you can freeze and have a break for a number of weeks
For breakfasts, ready brek or weetabix with pureed fruit is nice too. Lots of the packets have lots of added sugar.
