What to make for 10mo refusing to be spoon-fed?

Or to be exact, refusing to be spoon-fed anything savoury. Whether I spend ages making something delicious and nutritious, or if its out of ella's kitchen/cow and gate etc, it is always rejected!

He loves yogurt and porridge from a spoon - but nothing else.

He will eat small sandwiches, courgette and cheese muffins, cheese on toast, bananas - things that he can pick up and feed himself (I think he would rather be baby-lead weaned). But I'm running out of ideas for recipes of suitable and nutritious meals he can feed himself.

He is bottle fed now, which is also a struggle sometimes as he doesn't always want milk!

What meals do you eat?

duskonthelawn · 02/12/2016 21:06

At 10 months can he not just have a small portion of your own meals (within reason) give him a spoon and let him practise with that and use his hands?

MessezFaire · 02/12/2016 21:07

Just give him whatever you're having, let him try with the spoon/fork himself

I sometimes eat a protein, veg and pasta/potatoes or soups.

I usually puree some of what I have and offer that.. Were you going to suggest cutting up what I have and offering as finger food?

As.the others said. Whatever you are having but cook with no salt where possible. Actually my 9 month old is always checking to see if I am.eating the same thing as her. Today wasn't a very good day on ideas, but.yesterday she ate her baby cereal with her hands, had leftover chocolate vegetable pancakes for lunch and had a pumpkin bake thing for dinner.

Sorry x-post.

He'll be alright with small pieces of meat do you think?
I think I'm over-tired and over thinking this.

My dd has never been fed by anyone, she's 11 now so I doubt she ever will, lol. She finger fed until she could control a spoon herself. She ate lots of fruit, veg and meat cut up, little sandwiches, toast. She ate pretty much what we were eating. Whatever you were going to purée, just give it as it comes.

MakingBaconPancakes · 02/12/2016 21:18

Thank you :) I am exhausted, just started back at work and it's hard to see the obvious sometimes! I forgot about hummus catsofa, I love it, haven't bought it in months! And Venys, thinking about it, he does always want whatever I am eating. Even vegetable samosas!

My DS was like this although he would eat nothing with a spoon including yoghurt.

Give him things he can pick up even if it is mash they can eat it by hand..It will get messy but better than refusing the foods.

BadToTheBone · 02/12/2016 21:21

Oh and I should say, she never choked on anything, although I always stayed close. Lots of things were chewed to a pulp and soggy, yuck!

Artandco · 02/12/2016 21:22

Yes just offer him what you have. Dot. Chop pieces too small, it better to give him a strip of something so he can hold and just gun or bit off what he wants.

Scrambled egg and avocado are good finger food that are soft also

catsofa · 02/12/2016 21:23

That was a dump of my own list for ideas for my son BTW, for when I'm eating something he can't have.

VikingLady · 02/12/2016 21:29

Official NHS weaning advice is that finger foods are fine after 6 months, if the child can sit up unaided and manage to pick up the food.

DD never once accepted a single spoonful of purée. I tried all the standard baby foods, including trying proper baby food recipes, but the first food she actually ate was at 7m when she reached over and stole my sandwich!

NiceFalafels · 02/12/2016 21:48

I just gave mine whatever we were eating. I didn't hold back, so curries or whatever experimental meal we felt like cooking. And we were constantly experimental! DC's chose to eat or not. Was up to them. Didn't pander to them or fuss or encourage. We luckily have 4 children who eat anything. They like trying new tastes.

maisybobbins · 02/12/2016 21:53

Spaghetti with fingers is brilliant fun.

venys · 03/12/2016 13:24

Ha ha I was thinking about messy play today. Will definitely do spaghetti. I think they want what you are eating as you are teaching them what is safe.

buckyou · 03/12/2016 15:11

My baby has never really had any spoon feeding. Well not until she was a bit older and then she sometimes asked for help. But we have things like:
Spag bol
Pasta bake
Chicken Carbonara
Sunday roast
Chicken curry
Fajitas
Chicken casserole
Beef casserole
Bangers and mash
Fish fingers, waffled and beans (on a bad day!)

For lunch we have sandwich, jacket potatoes or leftovers.

Shes had all these things from being little. Even of its not 'finger food' they normally find a way to shovel it in. Give her a spoon to practice with too.

MakingBaconPancakes · 03/12/2016 20:43

I had meatballs today and gave ds a little plate with some pasta. All went well until he spewed it up!! So he had a banana after. I think he's got two top teeth coming through. We had chicken and courgettes cutup for lunch, which 1/3 of his was eaten slowly.
