Refusing food after illness?

DS has been really poorly with tonsilitus and was refusing his milk and all savoury food for about a week. He lived on water, fruit puree and petit filou. He seems better, but is still refusing savoury food. Any ideas to tempt him back, he used to wolf everything, makes me when he cries when I offer his dinner.

Blimey! So glad I'm not the only one suffering this!! DD had vomiting for over a week and now all she'l have is bloody banana porrige!!! Feel terrible when she refuses the zillions of protein meals I've made! I wish I had the answer. Think the only thing to do is relax about it and add fruit puree to savoury stuff and each time add a bit less. That's what I'm doing cos I don't want food time to be a stressfull experience and apple and pear is good for them anyway.

So glad to hear there's someone else. His huge tummy is less huge and that makes me sad too. That's a good idea, the only savoury thing he ate this week was a super sweet curry with sweet potato so maybe sweetening up savoury stuff might help.

in the same boat with dd.... she's lost all the weight we were so relieved she gained recently

Every time my twins get sick or are teething they go off their food. All they will eat is fruit, rice and yog.

Good news is it has always come right - takes a good couple of weeks then we get back on track and eating savoury foods again. Just keep offering it to them and don't go to too much effort so you don't feel bad throwing the food away

My ds is the same, he had a viral thingy, its been 2 weeks and he'll only eat cheese, fruit yogurt and a teeny bit of toast..gonna try beef stir fry today we had last night!

It's really hard to pretend it's no big deal when they refuse food. I do a big fake smile and a fake cheery voice and say "never mind" while reaching for the petit filou. He's back on his milk properly today though so am hoping his appetite is on its way back.

Ds always refuses food for about 3 weeks after he is ill. I just continue to offer it and eventually when hunger overtakes him he will start eating again. It is horrible when he goes without food but when his appetite returns he usually makes up for lost time.

Went to doctors today and he said adults eat because they think they should but babies eat when they know they need to. He's really cool!

That's a really good phrase for me to remember. Ds does have a huge fat store in reserve so I'm sure he'll be ok for a while.

ooh have had realy success today. Just put pieces of roast chicken, fish goujon, carrot and new potato on his tray and he's eaten loads. It seems to be the spoon he doesn't want, shall keep going like this.

must be the day for it, dd is ploughing through the kitchen cupboards today..... i've never seen her eat so much!

AitchTwoOh · 17/02/2007 20:03

my dd always goes right off her food and back onto milk by the gallon when she's ill. we ust offer her what we're eating and after a few days she generally makes a lunge for her father's sandwich and we know we're back on. manuka, your doc sounds great.

it's weird, isn't it? you'd think they'd work up to eating what they used to but in dd's case she seemed to be making up for lost time...
