BLW is all very well if....

  1. Your baby has very good gross motor skills
  2. You are not concerned about their weight gain
  3. You have the time and money to prepare a wide variety of foods, most of which end up on the floor.

My dd is 7 months, weaned at 6. I was looking forward to weaning her as she was under her growth curve and I thought it might help her get back on it (it has). I have been trying finger foods but have mainly relied on home-cooked mashed or pureed food as she does not yet have the dexterity or the brain development to understand that the stick of brocolli put in front of her is her lunch, no matter how long I leave her with it.

If I had done BLW, my baby would be unhappy and underweight (she loves her solids) and I would be miserable and worried. So while it works for some babies I really think a degree of caution needs to be exercised in believing that all babies can eat finger foods from 6 months.

Hunker - I AM going to post a picture of her artwork on here shortly.....

Would be REALLY interested to know who actually does 'proper' BLW when they have two older children?

hunkermunker · 15/02/2007 13:57

I see you've upped your "it's only first time mums who bother with this nonsense" Enid

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:00

my mother had four of us in the 70s and none of us was on purees after 6 months because we'd all been weaned at 3 months. she would have considered it a retrograde step. i have memories of feeding the wee one mush but the minute they could feed themselves we were offski.

likewise, of course, we were all out of nappies at one. apparenlty this really is true, btw.

i don't think that BLW is simply defined by the absence of spoon feeding, it's also about not stressing about amounts of food, which is something that a mother of three would be more able to do just because she'd presumably be more confident, having experienced those days when only milk will do.

Does DP count as an older child?

Enid · 15/02/2007 14:01

Look I really never meant to be so combative about it. But if you have two other children who eat things like lasagne, cottage pie and fish pie, those things are HARD to serve to a baby who feeds itself, especially if you are in a bit of a hurry racing between pick ups/clubs. I find I just don't have TIME to let Pixie feed herself - although she does do breakfast herself (apricot wheats). I did put dollops of sheperds pie on her tray and she did have a lovely time with it , but I did it at a time when I didnt have to rush off somewhere.

yes yes I am sure I live some terrible harried consumerist life but thats the truth of it

Enid · 15/02/2007 14:02

yeah right aitch

doncha just love those mother/MIL memories?

bundle · 15/02/2007 14:05

apricot wheats sound nice

Enid · 15/02/2007 14:06

yes dd3 loves them

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:06

no really about the potty training, there was a good article in the guardian about it recently. (i know this cos my mother brandished it about three cm from my nose, saying something along the lines of 'SEE!)

Busty · 15/02/2007 14:07

I love apricot wheats too!

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:08

and i suppose the fish pie scenario depends on how good eaters your other two are. we were at our friends' house the other day and dd was first to finish her fish pie as one of her 'big cousins' was having a 'moment' and refusing to try it at all.

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:10

busty, am loving your name. sassy.

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:16

is that you, vvv?
btw i forgot to tell you that my boss's cats are called busty and ray now. busty's is apparently a bosomy ginger.

Busty · 15/02/2007 14:17

I know you said you were going to lobby your boss for it ..........

hunkermunker · 15/02/2007 14:17

Busty and Ray are my two favourite names now.

I am thinking of conceiving fraternal twins just so I can call them that.

AitchTwoOh · 15/02/2007 14:17

ray they think is tortoiseshell but suffers badly from alopecia.

sorry barging in on discussion, Im trying blw (despite saying "BLW OH FGS" over and over to friends in rl) as dd2 now is refusing the spoon and to be honest I dont have the bloody patience anymore to feed her,(Im sore, Im alone at home ALOT, Im tired and that's that) dd1 is getting a tad jealous of it all too!!! Im also refusing to bloody pureee anymore , enough already , been there done that , got meeself in a right twist 3 yrs ago , especially one frustrating day in john Lewis, when the health and safety police came out and said they wouldn't heat up my lovingly prepared meat and 2 veg moosh !! They woud however heat up the jars of HIPP orgainc stashed behind the counter & yes I gave those too!!!Wish Id know then about being able to give whatever we were having, I would have had much nicer days out.

and if one day your gnocchi recipe goes wrong, simply roll out the mixture, dry fry it and call it potato scones...
