How much meat do your babies/toddlers eat?

I'm a veggie but dh is definitely not, so ds is eating meat. We're doing BLW which has been v successful, and ds generally loves all food - he just ate more than I did for breakfast!

However recently he seems to have gone off meat, well more specifically chicken, and isn't as keen on fish as he was either. I know you can raise children to be veggie, but I don't want to - so I'm just wondering how much meat is normal for a child of his age (almost 11 months).

Anyone?

Soemtimes I think the texture of meat is not that popular in chldren of that age. They don't always like chewing it. Although I found fish and chicken to be the favoured ones. I didn't do BLW but they were eating pretty much that way by 11 months - on chopped up adult food rather than purees/mash IYSWIM.

If you stick with it he will probably gradually get more used to it.

I've given my dd a variety of meat: chicken, tuna, beef, pork, venison, etc.
I give her a small proportion of meat to veggies.

I did a quick google search and found this , it might help you

Thanks Deputy! He does eat more red meat, but I tend to cook more chicken (just habit I think) in a week probably 1/2 nights of fish, 1/2 of red meat and the rest chicken. I'm actually not worried about protein, as a veggie myself I know he's getting enough. It's the iron - I was v anaemic post birth so it's the only thing I really worry about.

Iron found in green leafy veggies.
A good variety of those should be adequate

that's a great link, deputy. agree about the green veg, percypig, break out the brassicas!

percypig · 13/02/2007 09:49

Break out the what??? I live in N Ireland - we must be v out in the sticks cos I've never heard of them and I love most vegetables (obviously not brussel sprouts which are evil)

sorry, brussels sprouts are brassicas... although i too hate them.

from t'internet.

"The brassica family of vegetables includes: broccoli, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, collard greens, pak choi and kohlrabi. It is one of the healthiest and most nutritious vegetable groups. Recent research has highlighted its strong anti-cancer benefits."

percypig · 13/02/2007 09:59

You see, weirdly broccoli is one of the few veggies ds is not that keen on - maybe he knows it's related to brussel sprouts!

DS1 (2.10yo) would eat just meat given the choice. "More ham sandwich, Mummy, please" means "Can I have some more ham as I've pulled my sandwich apart and eaten the last lot" His favourite is chorizo.

DS2 loves meat too - but eats more fruit and veg and loves brussels.

hunkermunker · 13/02/2007 09:59

DS2 is 12mo btw.

AitchTwoOh · 13/02/2007 10:03

percy, do you overcook the broccoli? dd is 13 months and i find she likes it not done al dente, like dh and i, so i do cook hers a bit longer. and dd is the same with sandwiches, hunker, although her absolute favourite is pink steak.
