Frozen purees.

I've been merrily re-heating my home-made puree cubes to tepid before feeding to DD for weeks now, but I've just read somewhere I should be simmering for 5 mins, then leaving to cool before serving. Anyone know what the reason for this is and if it applies to veg as well as meat? I thought if they were cooked then frozen immediately it would be fine.

don't know the answer but I just give them a zap in the microwave till they dissolve - deliberately don't heat them too much because of destroying vitamins and risk of scalding. DD seems fine so far

I guess it's a safety precaution in case they are not frozen quickly enough after cooking.

I know that when I was using frozen puree I either defrosted in the fridge (if remembered to take them out the freezer or in the microwave and then cooked till really hot then let it cool. I think its to ensure all the bacteria is killed off. I did it with veg aswell but I don't think the risk is as high as it would be for meat, eggs, rice etc. It was just habit after a while.

I heat them til they're piping hot and then let them cool. Don't simmer them for 5 minutes though - like F@F said, I don't want to destroy the nutrients.

I meant "I" don't simmer them for 5 minutes btw - I wasn't telling you not to! Ah yes, and for fruit or anything I want to serve cold I try to remember to get them out the night before and defrost them in the fridge.

Thanks, guess I'd better start heating them then. So,what do you do when you're out and about at feeding time? My idea of heating up a few cubes in a bowl over hot water is out the window now I guess. So much for escaping the kitchen

Should mention I've only done fruit and veg so far, would be more careful about re-heating meat thoroughly.

i would just defrost everything to room temp - meat, rice, fish and fruit. had no probs. ds got a tummy bug once but several of his friends had it so likely to have caught it from them. if you can bear to risk (possibly) slight runny tum then i would just do it that way, particularly the odd occasions when you are out. i have been doing this for 8 months, mostly twice a day, and as i said, no dire consequences. tbh, i think we can spend so much time on precautions that life is not snjoyable anymore. but don't listen to me, i don't have baby gates either (ds can climb up and down stairs though at the age of 14mo).

Noseynora - I try not to be out and about at feeding time, but if I am it's jars I'm afraid. And like F@F I've only done fruit and veg so far - meat will be cooked through thoroughly.

My logic was that it had already been cooked thoroughly, and that freezing it would stop any bacteria from growing, or so I thought. Not so sure now Just started with chicken the other day which is what is worrying me. Will start heating through to be on safe side, and will get some jars for any days out Twinkle.
Have done a google search (of course ), lots of puree info/recipies etc, but not much on re-heating/serving.

I think the problem is that once you defrost it any bacteria that have been lying dormant in the freezer will spread like wildfire, so you need to then heat the food through thoroughly to kill them.

I zap til very hot and then leave to cool for 10 mins while he has a bottle. But if dd is fine I wouldn't worry

I do jars on days out for the same reason. Annoying though as he doesn't like jars much so end up chucking most of it

I used to heat it up really hot and then leave it to cool. Not fruit. Just meat. With fruit I used to gently warm it or serve it at room temp.

If we were out then I'd find a cafe with a microwave. Or bf and have solids later.
