Cut back too much on milk since weaned

What can I do to get DS to drink more milk?
Hes 27 weeks old and has been weaned for 3 weeks. His routine is normally like this;

7.30am - Milk
8.30am- Porridge
12pm- Dinner( 4 cubes of veg)
2.30/3 - Milk
6pm- Dinner ( 2 cubes apple and baby rice)
7.30 - MILK.
2am- milk

The problem is he has dropped how much milk hes having. He is now having 4ozs at each feed. I dont think I can cedrease the solids as 4 cubes of veg isnt really that much anyway. It seems that he will eat food but not take milk.
Is the amount of milk hes having ok?

kbaby, I think he should be drinking more milk. I would cut the food rather than the milk tbh at this age. Maybe reintroduce some milk before his lunchtime solids?

kbaby · 10/02/2007 22:09

Thanks, Ive tried giving him milk before his solids but he still isnt interested. Even his breakfast milk he will only take 4 ozs or so and thats from not being fed since about 1/2am ish

Can you mix in some milk with his solids? Try and get it in that way?

puffling · 10/02/2007 22:36

He should still need 32ozish.
Give him much less at 2am, or gradually cut it down, or bring it earlier. I used to do a 'dreamfeed' at 10pm. Decreasing or getting rid of the 2am feed will increase his hunger for the 7.30am feed. If I'd waited till 2am, dd would not have drunk properly at breakfast.
I think he should be having some at 11amish and even a little before his tea.
It's important he gets his milk as as he's only just begun weaning, he won't really be getting milk in his solids.

BuffysMum · 10/02/2007 22:42

My youngest literally dropped a feed the first week I weaned her and then another a few weeks later and we ended up on a morning and bedtime snack by about 8/9 months (weaned at 25 weeks) I would just say if he likes his food just go with it - give him more food you really can try him on more than just cubes of purree. Try soft veg, fingers of bread etc

Twinklemegan · 10/02/2007 22:43

I've been told to aim for around 21 oz Puffling, although DS does usually take around 25 - 28oz. There's no way I could get 32 oz into him now as he's only on 4 milk feeds a day. I don't think a 6 month + old baby on 3 meals a day needs 5 milk feeds as well - sorry.

puffling · 10/02/2007 22:56

You're right Twinklemegan, I did think after I posted that I should have said less. Thinking back, DD would have had 28ish at that time. We were still doing 5 feeds, but her 5pm and 10pm ones were as little as 2 oz.

Twinklemegan · 10/02/2007 23:02

Hi again Kbaby. Just had to pick up on that point before. Re your OP, I still give DS a milk feed before his lunch, at around 11am. Do you think yours would take that or would it make him cut down on his lunch too much? If you could get one more milk feed into him (despite what I said earlier) that would make it 20oz, but he's possibly just not a very hungry baby. Do you mix the baby rice with his milk? What about his porridge? You could try introducing cow's milk for mixing if you haven't already as this would help make up for any lack of formula milk. HTH.

FirstAtForty · 10/02/2007 23:02

The Annabel Karmel book says 21oz in at least 4 milk feeds once weaning has started (21-28oz before weaning).

His solids don't seem excessive though, so unless his weight is dropping I wouldn't worry, maybe just keep offering both, I would have though he would take what he needs.

yawningmonster · 10/02/2007 23:28

Also count any milk used in porridge and to thin out veges as well.

fluffyanimal · 12/02/2007 12:32

You could mix butter or cream cheese into his purees for the extra dairy protein.

kbaby · 12/02/2007 22:47

Twinkle maybe I should offer milk at lunch again just to try and get him to increase his milk intake, I guess if he then doesnt want the solids it doesnt matter, although what I have found on the times ive done it he drinks the milk eats his dinner but then doesnt want a feed at 2.30/3pm and so im back to the same amount of milk anyway.

Ive tried doing a dream feed but it makes no difference to the 2am waking so it meant he was then having too much milk at night and none in the day.

what times does everyone else feed to try and fit in 4 milk feeds and 3 meals??

LOL, I've posted my routine on here ad nauseum - here goes (all times are ish)...

7am 7oz bottle
8am breakfast
11am 4-5oz bottle
12pm lunch
3pm 7oz bottle
5.30pm tea
7pm 7oz bottle

HTH!

Hi kbaby

DS has also cut down lots on his milk recently. I'm trying not to worry too much and I'm adding milk to all meals. I offer milk lots (breast and cup) if he won't take it there's not a lot more I can do.
It's difficult to know with b/f how much he 's getting but I would guess its much less than he's supposed to be having.

Our routine-

6ish milk
8.30ish cereal with milk
10.30ish milk
12ish lunch
2.30ish milk
4.30ish tea
5.30ish milk
8ish milk and bed
11ish milk
3ish milk
I know it looks like a lot of milk but each feed lasts less than 5 mins and I would guess he is taking 2-3 ozs each time maybe 5ozs at the 8pm feed.

dcb · 15/02/2007 19:23

similar to the others (breast fed)

6ish - milk
7ish - breakfast
10.30ish - milk
12ish - lunch
2.30ish - milk
5ish - tea
6.30ish - milk before bed
occ milk overnight

hth

kbaby · 18/02/2007 11:13

maybe as hes having milk in the morning at say 2/4am and doesnt want his breakfast milk I may stop giving that to him and move it to a different time to see if that will help.
Anyone else feeding approx
4am - milk
8am - brekkie
10.30- milk
12- lunch
3pm- milk
6pm - dinner
bedtime milk
