Not making any progress with a sippy cup

DS is just over 8m. I have tried everything I can think of to encourage him to drink from a cup but no joy so far. If I try to do it for him he clamps his mouth shut and gets upset. I've tried lots of different cups. I've tried putting milk in it. I've tried giving him one to play with - it's the one "toy" that doesn't make a beeline for his mouth. I've tried abandoning all attempts completely for a while and then trying again. I've tried only offering him water that way (ie no bottle) and he ended up constipated (he drinks a lot at meals). The most progress we have made is changing the spout of an Avent Magic cup to a teat which he will take if I do it but he won't hold the handles so it's just like a bottle anyway. What can I do to encourage him?

My Ds is nearly 10m and drinks very little too, he actually likes drinking from my glass. I have been asking a similar question because he coughs and splutters everytime he has some water. It was suggested to try a doidy cup - but sorry i have no experience if it works.

DS is 16 months and won't hold a cup by himself (or a bottle for that matter)

NO!

NO!

NO!

Sorry I know this is not any help but just thought I'd mention it.

ok sorry this won't be comforting but ds (2.4) has never got on with sippy cups.

He uses a normal (plastic usually) cup without a lid.

HOpefully someone will be able to give you advice though.

I thought ds was the only one who hated them.

ok, thanks for the honesty! I guess I just feel like I'm missing some key thing because all my friend's babies have got the hang of it. He will take sips out of a regular glass but nothing like the quantity he drinks at meal times. I thought about a doidy but he flails about so much how do you not end up with water everywhere??

oh, and does it matter that he takes all his water from a bottle? I guess not at this stage but what about when he's older, aren't you supposed to get them off bottles ASAP for their teeth?
