Babies that are b/fed on demand throughout their first year of life aren't that interested in solids...

... until coming up for a year/18 months. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them, or that they'll never eat well.

It's what I found with my dd's, and also what I've read many times on this and other message boards. My dd's are now five and three and both fantastic eaters.

What are your experiences?

(btw ds just loves his solids now, just to prove me wrong... . But I really think it happens a lot and it would be helpful if it was a more widely known fact so that parents could relax about it a bit more.)

I have to disagree. Both my DC ate like horses.

DD would feed 7/8 times a day. Plus have breakfast (usually 2 wetabix), morning snack (fruit), lunch (baked potato with tuna, peas, corn & cheese), afternoon snack (yogurt) and a cooked dinner (beef stew or the like). Though he feeds did go from "2-siders" to 1 side. But still a lengthy feed each time.

After that chowing down, I thought I was prepared for the next one. But DS ate even more, if that is possible. Eg. for lunch & dinner he would have 4 "courses" a cooked main (beef stew), a huge pile of veg, a piece of bread, some pudding & a yogurt. Yes two times a day!!! In addition he also had midmorning snack, On top of his 6/7 feeds a day!

You'd think they'd be massive -- but both are only average weight, but above average height. (DS is 94.5 cm at 2.5yrs)

Not in our case either - DD was bf until 2 (on demand until 18 mths) and loved her food from the word go.

inanidealworld · 09/02/2007 11:01

DS2 (8 months) is breast and bottle fed and there is nothing he likes better than to stuff his little fists with whatever solid foods are on offer and shove them in his mouth!

belgo · 09/02/2007 11:04

emkana - I agree totally. My dd wasn't really interested in eating until about the age of 12 months - she's 17 months old now, and would quite happily bf the whole day with the odd biscuit thrown in.

Flamesparrow · 09/02/2007 11:07

Disagree.... DS is fed on demand and eats anything in sight - has done since 6 months.

disagree my 3rd & 4th practically gave up bf within weeks of weaning of 6 months dd4 gave up completely by 11 months

TheArmadillo · 09/02/2007 16:05

agree

Tommy · 09/02/2007 16:08

DS1 more or less fully formula fed - was extremely fussy about solids (and still is about food in general )

DS1 - fully breast fed on demand for first year - much more adventurous food wise and would wolf down anything I put in front of him

harpsichordcarrier · 09/02/2007 16:08

agree. dd2 in particular was still eating tastes of things until about ?8 or 9 months. now she is 15 months and still bf on demand and she still eats less than her contemporaries in terms of quantities. she is a bit of a porker though

PinkTulips · 09/02/2007 16:12

hard to tell with dd as i think her intolerances affected her eating a lot

so far true for ds though, he's a huge heftybaby and loves his food (solid and milk) but doesn't eat a lot of solids. he still isn't interested in more than one meal a day

fishie · 09/02/2007 16:12

no here too - ds ate plenty and was very adventurous. his friend who was ffed is and always has been far pickier. interestingly ds mainly had finger food whereas his friend is still partially spoonfed at 18m.

kels666 · 09/02/2007 16:26

disagree. My lo suddenly became ravenous at 5.5 mths & dropping centiles (I was about to be referred to my GP). Started him on solids and his weight gain improved. He was b/f on demand, but it clearly wasn't satisfying him

lyndyloo · 10/02/2007 16:34

Agree and like frenchleave I am struggling to keep going with bfing. I am skinny anway but 7 months of bfing have reduced me to a size 8. I know some of you will be thinking 'get her!' but really it doesn't suit me!

At nursery LO will eat food but at home has very little interest. Just hoping she will get the hang of it soon.

beansprout · 10/02/2007 16:36

Ds is 2.3, still b/fed and his hearty appetite is often commented on.

So, load of old tosh then.

SaucyMoo · 12/02/2007 01:12

Agree-my 8 month ds is the same-really struggling with solids, but i have made an effort to reduce bm so he gets very hungry and has to eat-my problem is that he doesnt like baby food, he just wants to eat things he shouldnt really-adult food like biryani, biscuits- although he likes cheese and yogurt-anything which tastes nice really..oh and paper
