Ds will be 24 weeks tomorrow. I've been giving him some purees for about 2/3 weeks ish but only casually. I havent stuck to a routine or forced it. Tbh he doesn't seem all that bothered about it and the last few days he's really been squirming and pushing the spoon out.
About a week ago I tried him with some stems of Brocoli and Carrot battons and he really enjoyed them. I think it was more fascination with the food rather than eating but he enjoyed that more than being fed I think.

Now the thing is, he is definatley more hungry now. He's taking more milk, more often and waking ridiculous times in the night. Not to mention the grabbing of my food. If I go down the BLW route, which I think I might have to, my issue is that he's not really going to get much of the food is he?Well to start with anyway.
My second issue is, is it safe to give him finger foods at this age? I'm a bit worried with the chocking and gagging thing.

I'm really quite confused with it all. Dd was a fantastic eater. She had anything put infront of her.

he'll eat what he wants- and he doesn't need very much at this stage anyway.

Re: the milk and waking- could be a growth spurt

NbgsYellowFeathers · 06/02/2007 10:12

Well he's been waking since the beggining of December.
Its become very tiring now

Milk has way more calories than veg, so if he's hungry, milk's what he needs (and it does sound like a growth spurt).

Weaning is a seperate issue from being hungry for more milk - like you found, he's just enjoying new tastes / textures / experiences of the veg batons.

Finger foods are safe so long as you keep an eye on him and don't give him anything he can't handle himself. It's worth reading the infant resus bit of whatever baby books you have, and maybe even doing a course, just so you feel like you're prepared in case!

Aitch's blog is of course a mine of information on all things BLW...

Thats spooky ,cos dd2 isnt at all that fussed with the food either, but is definatley hungry , as shes draining bottles. Shes having something like 30-34 oz a day including the night feeds and on top some baby rice mixed with purees aruond tea time.

Ive tried the finger foods (broccoli/pear/carrot) and all it does is make her retch and gagg and then throw up !!!!!

Im really not sure what to do either. DD1 walfed bowls and bowls of purees down and LOVED food and that was 2mths prior to dd2 being fed now IFYWIM!!!This one just wants milk milk and more milk. dd1 detested the stuff !!

hungry doesn't mean he needs weaning, it means he needs more milk.

Well I tried him with sticks of Avocado, which he seemed to enjoy. I cant say he ate anything but he enjoyed none the less.
I also made some sweet potato wedges for him last night and he liked them too but he gagged, threw up and brought a whole feed with it.

thing is, they do gag, and they do throw up occasionally (dd did it about twice). but the next time they'll be better at moving their food around their mouths, and less likely to gag. it's all part of the learning process, imho. same as when they start using cutlery they'll poke themselves in the eye a few times.

i very much thought of food as a separate thing from milk in the early days, and so did dd. food was just squishy stuff for playing with, and of course she put some in her mouth just as she does with everything else.

am very impressed that he managed to eat avocado, it used to fly out of dd's hand... so that sounds like he's more than ready.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 09/02/2007 10:50

Do you leave the skin on the avocado aitch? I took it off and it was slippery but he did manage to get it in
The sweet potato was good too but again its very very squashy so it was rather an experiment of what looks good in the hair rather than what tastes good

We ate out yesterday and he chewed on a stick of cucumber and enjoyed that too. Didnt eat a single bit of it but loved chomping on it.

no, i didn't leave the skin on. we haven't had avocadoes for a while actually, i might give them another try in a while. hasn't really been salad weather, iykwim?
