with his expert handling of a grown up sized rice cake at just 6 months old.

the other moms with babies were so impressed they were all asking me about it and all went away with the blog address!

good on you! my baby group mums are far too busy chatting about AK and how many ice cubes they're on now to notice dd in the corner munching on a stuffed pitta.

bitzermaloney · 30/01/2007 18:06

I have been evangelizing too - the other mums in my nct group were all off to check out the blog this afternoon

PinkTulips · 30/01/2007 19:43

lol... i felt a bit preachy at first but they were really interested (all second timers with no wish to return to ice cube trays ). And ds was charming the pants off them showing off his rice cake, lol

hello. just read the site that you posted there and i'm also a first time mum. It said that at 7 months their child was having fistfuls of broccoli, banana, green beans, red pepper, rice cakes and hummus, toast and cream cheese, mature cheddar, peaches, apricots, avocado, cucumber, pear, pasta with anchovies, chilli and lemon (her father...), pork fillet, roast chicken, roast potatoes, Jersey Royals, sweet potatoes, asparagus, melon and butternut squash...... right so how does a 7 month old with maybe 2 teeth eat a melon or pork fillet without it being blended down and not choking... also i thought that the reason we do blend it is because their digestive system cant break down chunks...highlighting the word WEANING onto solids. I understood that baby led ment like let them tell you how much they want and dont force food on them. I'm not ranting or anything... just a bit confused with the whoel idea of a 7 month old actually eating and swallowing a roast potatoe

PinkTulips · 30/01/2007 20:07

They use their gums to chew livysmum. Rememeber that babies are born with teeth in their mouths.... just not poking through yet. A babies gums aren't soft and squidgy, they're quite hard and rough (have a feel in your babies mouth if you don't believe me)

And the weaning guidlines are nothing to do with the gut being able to break down chunks of food, but the ability of the gut lining to deal with food at all.

lumpy foods are recommended to all babies from 7 months, even those on purrees and whichever method you use you'll find that until well into their second year the majority of their food comes out the way it went in... babies digest very little of their food anyway

BLW allows a baby to have total control over how much they eat at any meal, unlike purree feeding where the baby is often forced to eat more just to clear the bowl

(besides which... i defy anyone to see my ds clapping his hands at the sight of dinner and eating spagetti by himself while we have a proper family dinner and not love BLW )

pinktulips and blitzer... we had a record number of people on the blog today... i guess that's down to you two, so thanks! keep up the good work.

any livysmum, it's all there in the blog. take a look at the gagging/choking section, but PT has really explained it already. there are A LOT of companies who need you to keep thinking that your baby needs to eat puree, but it Just Isn't True. You can't blame them for trying, though, they've got their kid's school fees to pay and all that...
And dd didn't even have two teeth when she ate all that stuff.

Blackalice · 01/02/2007 09:08

Alfie only got his 2 teeth at 8 months and happily ate all manner of things from 6 months, so teeth are by no means necessary! BLW does indeed rock. I've got a couple of mates onto it too

AitchTwoOh · 01/02/2007 15:03

hi blackalice, haven't seen you around in a while.

LRWGrumpyCow · 01/02/2007 15:47

Aitch - am heartbroken. My STUPID computer won't let me onto your blog again!! I saw that Widget's pictures were on there and proudly tried to show DH when he got home and nothing, can't get on :-( Will be back when the computer gets over its PMT!

Blackalice · 01/02/2007 16:40

Hi Aitch

I've not been on for ages. Been busy and only really posting on my home board on the "Eejit" site (you know who I mean LOL!)

Good to be back preaching on BLW!

fibernie · 03/02/2007 15:41

My DD still has no teeth at 13 months(as I've been telling all in the behaviour and development thread) but has been able to eat hunks of chicken, potatoes, salmon, huge wedges of melon, sandwiches, broccoli trees and all manner of other 'chewable' things!

Aitch's blog is great (Aitch, I'm Fiona of the fillable patties - I keep meaning to send you a pic - must get onto that).

If I have another, I would go down the BLW route from the word go. My DD is behind on all her milestones but still turns heads everywhere she goes with her remarkable eating skills!

Fiona
