BLW - your first times?

I'm just about to start with blw with my just turned 6 month old. Do you remember your first times? what did you give them? how old were your little treasures? how did it go?

It went well.
I would recommend Annabel Carmel books.
I did allot of batch cooking and freezing.
Started off simple, baby rice and breast milk mixed up.
The baby rice was the only packaged stuff i ever bought and i only bought one box of it, some people on here think that it is the work of the devil but we liked it.
Stewed fruit went down well, mashed veggies, finger foods like crumpets and toast was always good.

Hi llynnnn, have just started blw with my 6 month old DS (this weekend actually). Didn't intend to, but he just didn't want to go with the spoon & puree thing . So far he has nibbled on a ripe pear and a banana, planning to try some sweet potato tomorrow.

Hello, we started a few days ago when ds had just turned 25 weeks. Steamed courgette, went down a treat. Well, mostly went down the highchair and bib, but a little turned up in his nappy too.

Hiya

We waited til the magic 6 months and started with pear. Peeled it and steamed it then cut into pieces. We only steamed it as it wasn't perfectly ripe. We then went on to banana, baby rice cakes, broccoli and cauli. He seems to prefer fruit, although now I cook the veg for much longer until virtually falling apart and he is much keener on it now. Has just started enjoying toast at 7 and half months although only that milk roll bread as other sliced breads are to thick and gum up his mouth!

Good luck, its loads of fun!

Thanks for your quick replies. The main thing I'm worried about is her choking on a piece. She hasnt got any teeth yet but her gums are really hard so think she would be able to get a piece off but maybe not chew it enough not to choke! Am i just being paranoid?

no, you're being sensible. have you done an infant resus class or read any info about it? tbh they're just as likely to choke on a puree so any parent should think about learning what to do in the event of an incident.
having said that, dd has been BLWed and only choked twice. gagged loads in the first few weeks, but not choked.
the first food that DD ate was a bit of peach, because i was eating it and she showed a lot of interest. she sat on my knee and i held onto it while she grabbed my hand and got the peach to her mouth. and that was it... we were away.

bitzermaloney · 29/01/2007 21:44

Aitch - are they really just as likely to choke on a puree? So it doesn't make any difference how squishy you make the food? I have been steaming till v soft in the belief I was minimising the risks... I have memorised the section on choking in my baby first aid book though.

Must have been scary when your dd choked. Did you have to do the tipping-up-and-back-thumping etc or did she cough it back on her own? What was it?

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 21:54

the reason that they're as likely to choke on a puree is to do with the way that babies suck puree off a spoon and onto the back of their throat, so steaming finger food til soft is still a good idea. i suppose if you do choke on a puree it must be easier to disperse than somethign more solid.

and it was an apple she choked on and COMPLETELY my fault. we were out with a wee boy who is a bit older than dd and his mum gave him a bit of apple and offered some to dd. i hemmed and hawed and she said 'oh go on, she'll be fine'.

dd promptly choked and i had to slap her on the back to get it up. DD was fine, of course. i was not. she didn't have another apple until i could give her the whole thing to scrape at when she was about nine months old.

i don't think it did her any lasting damage, though, we shared an apple today and it was only when i went to get another bite that i realised that she'd eaten the whole thing, core and all! can't wait for the nappy.

llynnnn · 30/01/2007 13:48

i never really thought the risk of choking on a puree was very high at all! yikes its scray stuff. i've read and re-read the section on choking in my baby book, just hope that i never have to use it!
she is in nursery 2 days a week at the mo, do you think they would be very enthusiastic and supportive about blw? it would be more work for them because i guess it takes longer? suppose i could ask.

My DD2 is 16 months old now but we did part BLW when she was 6 months old. I felt happier giving her a whole apple to gnaw little bits off rather than a finger-food sized piece which she could have ended up swallowing before chewing.

It's amazing, however, quite how much they manage to gum. DD2 was eating what we were eating long before she had any teeth.

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2007 21:50

why don't you start a thread asking about the nursery? from what i understand they don't tend to have a problem as while it may take longer, they don't have to physically spoon food in so there's no harm in the baby sitting eating while the others are fed. plus, you are paying them... so tbh they shoudl do what you want really.

Jennster · 30/01/2007 22:36

llynnn, I gave my nursery a hippychick happy eater suit. At first they were bathing my dd in the sink after every meal, but with this coverall, it means she comes home in the clothes she went in.

They also loved the fact they didn't have to spoon feed her. Now they are VERY impressed with her eating ability. I think though she is better for them than she is for me though!

DS stole some mashed potatoe from my plate when he was 21 weeks old

he's 6 months old now and well into it, he had spagetti tonight and it was one of the cutest things i've ever seen in my life

i started on chunks of boiled or mashed veg but very quickly moved on to portions of whtever we're eating and the're's very little he's had trouble with or not liked (salmon got the 'are you trying to poison me' face, but very little else)
