I've not been paying too much attention to that part of the blog but DizzyBint's fabulous spaghetti tip on the other thread has made me realise that we must have come up with some but maybe haven't realised it... any thoughts? (apart from PUT SOMETHING UNDER THE HIGHCHAIR)

Use a crinkle chip cutter to make slippery food a bit easier to hold in the early stages.

Fillyjonk · 21/01/2007 14:15

buy that book...finger foods for babies and toddlers? jenny maizels? cos its very nice and easy to follow

oh and a breadmaker

lulumama · 21/01/2007 14:23

i made sandwiches and used cookie cutters to make them the a nice size, also interesting shapes . what was the spaghetti tip?

and give spag bol or anything tomato based to a naked ( except for nappy !) baby, as then it is their skin, rather than their clothes that gets stained !

evamum · 21/01/2007 14:24

always have something else to do in the kitchen while they are eating...
or phrased another way
Resist the urge to help!

always have fresh or quick cook fusilli pasta and pesto sauce- fast to cook and easy to hold.

colditz · 21/01/2007 14:37

Do it in the kitchen where it is nice and warm, and strip baby completely

fluffyanimal · 21/01/2007 14:57

Aitch this one's for you, having read on another thread about your nervousness with apple: I grate apple and mix it with philly cheese or even grated cheddar cheese and use it as a sandwich filling. or even just piles of grated apple - ds loves to scoop those up and munch.

AitchTwoOh · 21/01/2007 14:58

thanks chaps. the spaghetti tip was to twirl it on your fork first and then put the ball of spag onto the tray. really obvious, yes... but i hadn't thought of it at all so we've been spaghetti-free for six months.

thanks aitch ! i let babylulu hold the long strands and she dangles and slurps them into her mouth!

AitchTwoOh · 21/01/2007 19:45

dd's never quite got the hang of it...

I like the 'Put Something Under the Highchair tip'- I'm just wondering what kinds of things people use? We are just starting BLW and haven't got anything yet.

Enid · 21/01/2007 20:47

put a dog under the highchair

AlbertaWildRose · 21/01/2007 20:54
Grin
lulumama · 21/01/2007 20:56

second the dog suggestion....!! the food doesn;t hit the floor !

PinkTulips · 21/01/2007 21:02

get dp to clean the tiles every night [evil grin] and definetely strip baby before spag bol!

my top tip would be... try them on stuff before you decide 'oh he wouldn't be able to manage that' as they surprise you. i'm still amazed at how ds can manage foods dd barely can at 2!

AitchTwoOh · 21/01/2007 22:30

keep em coming ladies...

and for the record we put a piece of silk washable wallpaper under the highchair, which i fold and stick under the armchair when not in use. i meant to get some plastic backed fabric or a square of lino but never got round to it. so have a look in your cupboards before buying anything, i'd say.

OP posts:
Enid · 22/01/2007 10:10

but dont you have to clean whatever you put under the highchair?

why not just clean the floor [dim and puzzled emoticon]?

LRWG · 22/01/2007 10:15

Ignore all MIL's, skeptical friends etc. etc. and just believe!

suzycreamcheese · 22/01/2007 10:16

blw ?
what is it?

CanStarveWillStarve · 22/01/2007 10:18

That's my logic too Enid, so we just clean the floor 3 times a day.

Unfortunately the spaghetti one doesn't work for us, as dd likes to play with her food before eating it so it gets unwound again.

Invest in some long sleeved bibs.

Enid · 22/01/2007 10:19

or just buy a pack of cheap long sleeve tshirts from primark a size bigger than normal - cheaper, those long sleeve bibs cost a FORTUNE (well the ones in tesco do, ours are 3.49 each)

Enid · 22/01/2007 10:21

yes 3 times a day I:
a) wipe down the highchair pushing all the bits onto the floor
b) pick up the big wet bits and give them to dog/chuck them
c) broom if fairly dry or wipe if mushy
d) once a day after supper I use a flash wipe to do highchair and floor, rest of the day I use my E-cloth

sockmonkey · 22/01/2007 10:30

suzyCC... I was going to ask that.

Enid · 22/01/2007 10:31

baby led weaning

chucking stuff on teh highchair tray and getting them to feed themselves (finger food and otehr stuff)

sockmonkey · 22/01/2007 11:04

Thank you!
I am surprised at DS2 and how well he just gets on with it. Still can't get him to eat chopped up fruit though, but he handles shepherds pie with no problems.

AitchTwoOh · 22/01/2007 11:23

the reason we put something on the floor is that we've got floorboards, so the food would get stuck in between them... [bleurgh emoticon]
