I seem to be going on an on about the same old thing so I apologise. My DS is 8 months (today, bless him) and I wanted to introduce spag bol to him but am really unsure how I can make it i.e tin toms, tom puree. without over doing the salt, i seem to be worrying about every little thing and this is my second one.
any recipes ir hints and tips would be much appreciated.
thanks

I fry off mince with onions & garlic. Add a couple of tins of chopped toms, good squirt of tomato puree and a carton of passatta. Then whatever veg I feel like - all well chopped in food chopper thing. Usually mushrooms, carrots, courgettes & peppers. Often a handful of red lentils as well. No added salt in there at all. I add fresh herbs if available, or dried herbs - mixed, oregano & basil.

CanStarveWillStarve · 10/01/2007 23:12

Not sure where you think the salt would normally come from supersonic?

Some tinned tomatoes do have salt in (interestingly, it tends to be the cheaper ones that don't), but tomato puree doesn't normally contain any, and nor do any of the other ingredients, so just make it how you normally would.

superloopy · 11/01/2007 00:05

I fry leeks, mince and garlic together. Add a can of chopped tomatoes, fresh or dried basil and then any veg that I have in the fridge - carrot, spinach, peppers, mushrooms, broccoli or anything you have. When it is all cooked just blend it up in the food processor till the big lumps were gone I don't add any salt but sometimes added grated cheese on top or mixed in.

Laura032004 · 11/01/2007 08:23

Maybe the salt comes from a sauce that you'd normally add? I often add a Bertoli Tomato & Basil sauce if we're having it too. That's got some salt in it, but it's minimal once you work out the amount per ds1's portion.

I omit any added salt or streaky bacon, use lean organic minced beef.

Good way to sneak extra veg in too- peppers go well in it, chopped up finely.

My DS LOVES bolognese. Might make him some more this week

And Neopolina tinned tomatoes are great- very rich sauce.

Enid · 11/01/2007 10:16

dd3 has it how we have it (which includes pancetta or bacon)

fry pancetta, garlic and onion till golden
add minced beef (not the lean kind) and fry until brown
add tins tomatoes, stock or water and a bay leaf

simmer for about 2 hours

beckybrastraps · 11/01/2007 10:18

I cook up veg in some tinned tomatoes (courgettes, aubergines, onions, peppers carrots), and then whizz it up in a processor. Just use it then with mince. Also add lentils to use less meat. In fact, I often make it with just cooked lentils.

I vary how I make it - sometimes with lots and lots of veg, sometimes more just meaty. I like the flavours of both. Sometimes I add some finely (in chopper machine) chopped carrot very close to the end, which gives an interesting crunchy texture.

With DS1 being a veg hater if it looks like veg, I feel I must sneak it in everywhere!

beckybrastraps · 11/01/2007 15:01

Ah, but there is a difference between 'spaghetti bolognaise' and 'spag bol' Enid.

Tutter · 11/01/2007 15:03

i've always been a grease freak - can't abide oil slicks. so with all mince dishes i brown the meat first, then drain it while i fry onions and garlic, then put the meat back in and add all the other ingredients. somebody's prob going to come along now and tell me i'm losing half the flavour but it's just the way i've always doen it

twickersmum · 11/01/2007 15:16

annabel karmel has a good one where you simmer the bolognaise sauce in chicken stock too.. really breaks it down and easier for them to eat.
i can get the recipe this evening if you want it.
beckybrastraps - i also load my bolognaise sauce with veg: grated carrots, courgette, aubergine. result

Twiglett · 11/01/2007 15:18

don't understand where you think the salt comes from tbh

CanStarveWillStarve · 11/01/2007 15:22

I said that too Twig, but Laura suggests that maybe she is making it with sauce from a jar, which I guess probably does have salt in.

supersonic · 11/01/2007 15:45

Thank you so much sorry it has taken me so long to reply - I dont want to appear rude - I was actually worried about the salt in the tin tomato and tom puree - I dont add slat to any of our food I cook normally but was just wary of what foods I should avoid giving DS becuase of the salt content.
thanks you so much I am now going to cook away.

Tutter - since doing Slimming World, I'm the same. If it's just for me (& DH) I will rinse mince in boiling water after frying . I can't bear the smell or taste otherwise. I can smell the fat on DS1 after he's had mince at nursery!

Hulababy · 11/01/2007 18:35

Brown off diced organic beef. Add chopped onion, clove of garlic, and other veggies you have (peppers, mushrooms, courgette, aubergine, corn, etc). Cook to soften. Add a jar of passatta (chose one without added salt) and some basil, or other herbs. I don't season it further. Cook on hob.

When done, whizz up with hand blender till almot smooth.

Ideal for older children who aren't keen on their veggies, and can be frozen for later use. I also give the sauce to DH.

Mercy · 11/01/2007 18:44

I never add veg to mine.

Cook finely sliced onion in olive oil, add a crushed garlic. Brown the (steak) mince, add tinned toms, tomato puree and a pinch of oregano. Cook for 30 mins. Add a bit of red wine and black pepper for the grown ups later.

For babies, whizz in a mini blender and serve with chopped up spag.

ClaireL90 · 09/08/2017 19:09

Can the children have it with their teeth? As the tomatoes are acidic and can you add a pinch of sugar? To offset the acidity?

Zahrah5 · 10/08/2017 11:06

I would mot be worry about salt as I would be worry about BPA content as tinned tomato-based products is one of the foods with highest BPA content and it is recommended to avoid those for children and adults at least use tomato products from the glass.
