DD 6mths old tomorrow. Started weaning 2wks ago as showing all signs. Started with baby rice which she loved and couldn't wait for next mouthful. Have since been introducing new food every 3 days. Last 2 foods (melon & banana) she started taking well, but after 5/6 spoonfuls, started getting upset and trying to get out of bumbo. Didn't force, etc, but just wondering - am i trying to get her to take too much, is she not ready, or just doesn't like these foods? Any ideas would be appreciated x

i think i answered some of your spoon questions in my last post. really it's up to you. spoon feed the yoghurt if you like, but to me it seems a shame when dd is used to feeding herself. so what i do is have two spoons, i give her one to bang about and i load the other one up. when she sees the food loaded up she drops the first spoon and grabs the loaded one. then i do it all again. however, i do this quite rarely. i try my best to give her foods she can feed herself. there is no need for yoghurt IYSWIM. there isn't much that she can't feed herself.

as i said, don't worry about them learning to use utensils. they develop hand eye co ordination very quickly so utensils are an easy next step. when babies learn to sit you don't worry that they'll never progress to standing do you? these things just follow on. it's fine. babies like to copy you, so watching you use utensils is half of it.

oh yes peas and sweetcorn. the idea with them is that baby can't pick them up until he can manage to swallow them without choking. so you watch how he eats, see how he develops his pincer grip (thumb and finger rather than all of hand) then the idea is that he can handle peas. a big thing about blw is that the body only lets the baby do what it is capable of if that makes sense. so at 6 months baby might choke on a pea, so the body is designed not to be capable of picking one up yet.

dd did have peas and sweetcorn mixed in with veggie burgers before she could have picked them up whole, but then they were squashed up. so you could do that.

Thanks for all your help again. I realise yoghurt isn't an essential! Had a bit of a ?is she choking moment yesterday with dd when she ate a bit of the skin off a jacket potato and it got stuck. Obviously not enough to choke her, but enough to make her eyes water and a prolonged coughing fit. Luckily Dh and i didn't panic, and also i didn't get the "i told you so" anti BLW argument i was expecting! Again we're still v happy chose this route, only sticking point i guess is still the actual amount dd is eating. Not in a "she's hungry" kind of way, more the fact that all the food i can think of to offer her is so damn slippery that she picks it up but it slips away before she gets it in her mouth! Is there anything particularly non-slippery anyone can recommend or it just something that will improve with practice? BTW, not quite 6 months yet so not ready for toast, pasta etc! Sorry for the long post....!

'papery' things are quite difficult at first. by that i mean things that are sort of flat, like potato skin, cabbage, lettuce etc. but they do get better. i think they tend to get stuck on the roof of their mouth or side of their cheek and there isn't much texture to it to get it unstuck.

when is she 6 months? your first post said she was 6 months tomorrow. if you're still sticking with fruit and veg i would just have a good look round your supermarket/veg shop and pick as many things as you can and give them a go. sweet potato? white potato? (sainsburys have some gorgeous vivaldi ones which are sooo creamy, less crumbly than normal potatoes) courgette? grated apple? nectarines?

She's 6 mnths next Weds - got my dates muddled up! Have tried most of those things, courgette a hit! Guess only a few more days to go, i'll hit her with a mini Babybel then and see how we go! Thanks again xx

OK. For the 1st time in ages i couldn't get her to finish her bedtime bottle. She left 2oz. Is this what happens when weaning, especially when only just started? I guess we'll see what happens re waking through hunger, as hasn't done so for ages!! If she does wake, should i offer her a bottle? don't want to get back into that habit! She has her solids tea @ 5pm, bottle 6.45pm. Should i bring her tea forward? I know this is all based on 'what ifs?' and no-one has a crystal ball, but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else!!!

just wait and see what happens tonight, go with it. try not to think about it all so much. if she wakes hungry then give milk. if not just leave it. if she keeps waking then yes maybe move things round a bit. it's all trial and error anyway. as soon as you've sorted things she'll strat waking with teething or whatever so i really wouldn't worry about things being set up perfectly. enjoy it!
