Quantities and weight gain for 10 month old

Hi
I'm very new to this idea of online chats/discussions so sorry if I don't use all the right terms and stuff.
Wondered if anyone had advice for me on the amounts of food/milk my (quite small for his age) 10 month old needs. I've been giving him a jar of baby food for breakfast, lunch and dinner (porridge in the morning, vege stuff at lunch and fruit/sweet stuff for tea) plus around 20oz milk per day. Recently though, I read that baby jars are 'insufficient' for babies after about 7 months and that they won't put on weight if they are feed with them. That freaked me out because after a lot of ill-health, my son had only recently started to take solids...and now I feel like I'm already 'behind' with things and that he won't put on any weight.
I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

Bloody hell, is a jar of baby food really supposed to be insufficient?? Does your baby appear hungry? My dd (almost 11 months) is also very slow to wean and was exclusively breastfed until about 8 months.

Now our daily menu sounds very like yours, except she doesn't take anything like the quantity of a whole jar at one sitting. In fact she often refuses to eat of a spoon at all and will only nibble on bits of finger food. She is still on breast milk as well though.

I read somewhere that babies are not in any nutritional difficulty on milk only up to the first year, it's just that if you don't get them used to chewing/swallowing and different tastes and textures, then it's much more difficult after that.

My dd is an absolute picture of health and vitality and she is surely growing, so I'm letting her go at her own pace. I'm sure if she was hungry she'd eat more. I'd be very interested in other people's opinions though.

OK, so ds2 is 10.5 months old (weighs about 17.5lbs - so tiny!), he eats the following in a day:
6.30am 6/7 oz formula milk
7.30am half a weetabix with some chopped fruit and milk mixed in
10.00am snack (handful of raisins or something)
12.00 lunch - eg slice of cheese on toast/scrambled egg, yogurt and fruit/fromage frais
2.30pm 4oz formula milk
5pm tea - spag bol/chicken and veg/chilli con carne (about a large jar amount), morefruit!
6.30pm 6/7 oz formula milk
10pm 4oz formula milk

And anything else he can get his hands on from everybody else's plates!! His weight gain has been steady from birth, throughout growth spurts and early weaning so for him must be eating the right amount.

Personally I'd just keep offering food and milk - your ds will stop when he's had enough! Don't worry about feeling like he's already 'behind' - he's still very young and they all catch up in the end. Good luck

Should also mention that ds2 is incredibly active, which is probably why he eats quite a lot in relation to his size!

And, by the way, welcome to mumsnet, newtothislark!

Thanks so much for these messages - its good to know I am on the right track. Was v relieved to go to the baby clinic today and find out that he has put on a good amount of weight. I guess I should just be guided by him...
Thanks again for the responses
