Hello there experienced Proper Mums Who Know What They Are Doing,

I'm looking for some advice on those spoons that you use when babies start to feed themselves. Until now I've been loading up the ones i bought to wean her with (before i discovered BLW, obv) but i've just realised that they are recommended for using from 4 months onwards so they're definitely not designed for self-feeding.

I've seen some with very thick handles, some with almost curly handles, some with weird suckers at the end but also ones with metal prongs or spoons... also DD's mouth is quite small so a lot of the spoons seem to be very big. i think that we are now at a stage where she wants to use a fork as well so if anyone has any recommendations i'd be grateful for them. especially if they are cheap.

i got a set of five spoons and five forks in my local toy shops nursery section in bright plastic. they're great, deep, easy to hold, dishwasher safe and both of mine (5 months and 2 years) can manage them easily. ds even got a spoon in his mouth but got so excited he forgot to take the food of before dropping it.

they were just in the section with all the other random crap and were quite cheap

excellent work, expat. very impressive.

and that's kinda my point, quootie... there seems to be so many different kinds of spoons but instinct (and the experience of one year as a parent) tells me that so many of them are gimmicky shite.

you are looking at someone who had their fingers very badly burnt with a Tommee Tippee stupid bollocky sticky mat thing, remember...

What lives they lead!

Imagine having to carry your washing all about like that?

That must have SUCKED.

I bought my MIL a book called 'She was aye working' about Scottish wifies and the lives they lead.

She loved it.

We still use those spoons that came w/the Yeo Valley Fruit Tumbles .

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 07/01/2007 00:11

we've got them too. they're pretty good, but a bit shallow so she's not great at getting stuff out of a bowl with them. the more i think about it, the more i think it's a fork i'm after. we've got one already but it's so blunt it's damn near impossible to spear anything with it.

We used forks that came w/one of those tatty plastic cooking/kitchen/picnic sets the ILs bought for DD1.

They were PERFECT.

Tea spoons, cake forks and (recently) a butter knife in this house! Have a look in the charity shops where the big old-fashioned silver teaspoons go to die..

Actually, if you can persuade them to grip the spoon quite close to the bowl, they can use any spoon really.

I used First Years spoons and forks (they say semi-disposable) but I still have them 3 years on for DS2.

They did seem big to start with but I liked the plastic prongs on the fork, didn't use the metal ones till DS1 had mastered the art of not poking himself in the face

If you google them they sell them on amazon -I don't know how to make one of those link things, and me, married to an IT consultant!!!!

Ah the shame, below is the proper name from amazon

Sava Semi Disposable Infant Spoons - Set of 12

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 07/01/2007 14:25

they look really good, and cheap, which i like.
