I'd think so, in moderate quantities.

They are a bit high in fibre, and always have quite a bit of sugar added.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 20:04

what do you mean they have sugar added? confuzzled!!

mummynumnum · 05/01/2007 20:36

Got my cranberries from health food shop. does not say added sugar on the packet, but packet does not say much at all. [Hmm] Wary now!

Cranberries are inedible without added sugar. (quite a bit of added sugar, tbh) Are they dried cranberry?

Any sort of cranberry (sauce, dried, juice, whatever) is always sugared. Plain cranberry is as bad, or worse, than plain lemon, iyswim.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/01/2007 20:55

I lie, you can have cranberry with no sugar, if there is loads of fake sugar instead.

mummynumnum · 05/01/2007 20:57

Think will not give them dd then. I love them though, so I will carry on.

Well, it's not like equivalent other dried fruits have sugar in them. Ok, yeah, that's "natural fructose" rather than added (probably) sucrose. But it's added to a reasonably healthy high-fibre high-nutrient food.

(Sour) dried cherries taste quite similar to dried cranberries, but are (imo) tastier. And have no added sugar. Hard to find organic ones, though, hard to find at all.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 23:29

oh right i don't eat cranberries so didn't know that you couldn't eat them without sugar. i do like cranberry and raspberry juice though, maybe if you mix with raspberries you won't have to have the added sugar and can give them to dd? how old is she?

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 23:30

oh duuuuuuuuh you said. if you are pureeing you could mix with raspberry is what i was getting at. if doing blw though they might be too sour alone?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/01/2007 08:06

I am not familiar with cranberry and raspberry juice, but I strongly suspect it also contains either sugar, or apple juice. Raspberries are expensive, and not that sweet.

Yes, you could blend cranberry with something sweeter like apple juice, if you start with fresh cranberries, which is the only way to get unsweetened ones, afaik.

nappyaddict · 06/01/2007 11:55

no i didn't mean give her the juice, i meant puree with raspberries. you can get tinned or frozen ones which are cheaper. banana is good for sweetening things too but i am not sure how they would taste with cranberries?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/01/2007 12:39

Tinned cranberries are sweetened, generally. Dunno about frozen.

Yeah, banana is good at sweetening, but I fear that combination.

nappyaddict · 06/01/2007 13:00

i meant tinned or frozen raspberries not cranberries - don't even know if you can get frozen cranberries lol!

mummynumnum · 06/01/2007 13:03

Never seen frozen cranberries. Rasperry juice sounds lovely pureed with something. Yum!!

i gave this morning to ds, pureed grapes, raspberries and melon - he loved it. his bib is a lovely purple colour though now ..

mum said it would be too sour on its own and insisted i put sugar in it. i didn't and he ate it fine.

nappyaddict · 06/01/2007 19:39

oh also apple and pear are sweeteners. i gave plum, apple and pear today for tea as he cried when i gave him the plum on it's own so i think it must have been to sour. i reckon they would go well with cranberry too.
