ds is 6 months old and we want to go down the BLW route. however ds does not even play with the food when i put it in front of him so i think we could be a while off. when will it be that he needs solids as well as milk cos milk won't have enough iron etc for him?

up to a year all their nutritional needs are met by milk so there is still plenty time to get him used to a varied diet

oh phew. someone told be if they weren't on solids by 9 months they could become anaemic.

honestly, don't sweat it for a long time yet... better to feed the baby milk than stress him out about eating, iykwim? if he's really not interested then just leave it for a few days but let him watch you eat so that he gets the gist. good luck.

HappyHogmanAitch · 31/12/2006 01:03

and dark green veggies like broccoli are a good source of iron and also a great BLW food.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 31/12/2006 01:16

thing is he doesn't put ANYTHING in his mouth except for his thumb/fist. you know how most babies put everything in their mouths like rattles etc. well he just doesn't. looks like we could be in for a long bumpy ride!

DO NOT WORRY about it. Promise me you won't. some babies take almost the full year to really get the hang of feeding themselves... they just drink plenty of milk because that's what their bodies are telling them. are you FF or Bfing?

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 31/12/2006 01:38

FF. i know a few babies who havew not eaten solids til 12 mo but they were all bf so i thought a ff baby might need extra nutrients etc earlier.

me too. i've kept dd on the first milk, i never bothered changing as there looks to be plenty of added vits etc and fish oils so i am confident that she's getting enough. actually the iron thing has more to do with bfing than formula, although it's still not strictly accurate but nothing for you to worry about.

the main thing is not to get stressed, that's the worst eating habit you can pass on to a child, imho.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 31/12/2006 02:16

so even if he doesn't eat anything for a year i don't have to start shoving puree down his throat. that's made me feel better i thought i was going to have to give up my blw dreams

repeat to yourself 'until they're one food's just for fun'...

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 31/12/2006 02:40

"until they are one food's just for fun, until they are one, food's just for fun, until they are one, food's just for fun!" i think i've got it!

DD never really got into food until she was 12 months or so.. we ended up doing BLW , although we didn;t know it had a name after a lot of frustration and not eating...now she is 17 months, dropped her milk feeds to 1 maybe 2 a day, drinks her water from her beaker and has upped her food intake massively...AT HER OWN PACE !

much easier all round, just been out for lunch, she demolished an entire children's margherita at pizza express, sat at the table with us all....lovely !
