well BLW weaning is a way off for us yet cos ds won't pick up anything and put it in his mouth and he can't sit up yet. we are going to start him with some mashed up lumpy food instead and then go onto BLW when he is more interested. so i know he has to sit up to prevent choking if we do BLW, but what about lumpy mashed up food?a friend who is on smooth purees has her dd in a reclining high chair is this ok for lumps too?

How old is your ds?

kiskidee · 29/12/2006 14:30

unsupported. ie, can sit up steadily in a high chair or on someone's lap without much fear of him crumbling or falling over.

BLW is supposed to Baby led . If you spoon feed him mush now, then later you are just introducing finger foods.

I would not give a baby food in a reclining chair (try eating yourself sitting at that angle.) The bre minimum for me would be waiting until he can sit up, whatever you are giving.

should wait until they can sit better..really, that does make it easier...DD weaned at just under 26 weeks and sat up in her highchair, i only used to recline it if she was having some milk in her chair..

lulumama · 29/12/2006 14:33

BLW

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 29/12/2006 15:14

thing is he is hungry for food. he is having bottles every 2 hours, sometimes not even waiting this long and he is getting very bloated and uncomfortable with the amount of liquid in his tummy. looks like BLW will have to go out of the window then!

how old is he? is this just a growth spurt perhaps? a lot of people seem to wean sooner rather than later when they find a growth spurt difficult. much easier to wait til they can feed themself.

lulumama · 29/12/2006 15:51

try the hungry baby milk as a stop gap

the teeny amount of food he can consume will not fill him as much as milk..

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 29/12/2006 16:23

he is on hungry baby milk already. the farleys green one. don't think it is a growth spurt has been doing this for a few weeks.

does he pick anything up? toys? does he pull at his clothes? or do you mean he doesn't pick up actual food? does he sit with you when you eat your meals? does he watch you enjoying your food?

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 29/12/2006 16:39

he watches us enjoying food. he pulls at my clothes and his clothes. he picks up toys, but doesn't put them in his mouth like most babies would.

well then i would just keep eating your meals with him, put a little on his high chair tray for him to hold and play with and just see what he does. don't worry too much about it, he's getting all he needs from his milk anyway.

if it makes you feel better then do the purees. but blw isn't about feeding solid food to satisfy hunger, milk does that. blw is about them playing with their food and deciding when they want to eat it. but i appreciate a lot of people like the puree route cos they know how much their baby is getting.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 30/12/2006 04:04

so is there an age where milk won't be enough for him nutritionally in terms of getting enough iron etc?

he sort of slides it around but doesnt actually pick any up, but maybe i;m not giving him things that are easy enough to pick up? what sort of things should i try instead?

what have you tried already? some things that you would maybe think are good first finger foods really aren't, such as banana. you need things that are soft enough to eat, but firm enough to hold.

dd's first favourites were pears and peaches, skin left on, segmented. broccoli is good. keep the florets big. i always have a bag of broccoli in the freezer, also cauliflower. both are very easy to pick up. if you cut things into chunky chip shapes that usually helps, then they have enough of it to hold and get into their mouth, whereas a round disc shape is more tricky cos there's less to hold. think along the lines of toast soldiers.

babyledweaning.com is fab if you haven't already discovered it.
