is there a reason fruit and veg are considered as first foods for weaning?

Just that really. Was just wondering I there's a reason that fruit and veg are suggested as things to begin with. Are they easier to digest than say chicken or white fish? Surely those who do BLW would give anything suitable, therefore is there a reason those doing traditional weaning need to begin with veg and work way up to meats etc?

Where I come from - I was weaned on to fish curry and rice (!!) and I seem to have survived....

Both of my DC had small pieces of fish and meat on weaning, I think most do.

I don't think so. My babys' first food was chicken and carrot ( finger sized bits of both).

The current advice is to wait until they're six months and then give them a bit of everything you eat (within reason obviously - nothing too salty, no nuts or honey etc).

HairyLittleCarrot · 04/02/2016 21:09

Dunno. But in our house it went like this:
6 months of EBF, then
Day 1: Melon
Day 2: Minted lamb shanks with potato dauphinoise
Day 3: Balti. Followed by screams obviously. Stupid DH.

My memory's not that great and the chronology may be a little off. But you get the gist. Fairly quickly onto whatever we were eating. As I recall I was careful with salt, and honey, I think but everything else was fair game.

Isn't it because when people started weaning at 4 months or earlier, those were the safest things to start with and the easiest to purée as you'd have to spoonfeed. If you're starting around 6 months, you can give everything as PP has said, whether you're spoonfeeding or doing BLW.

Hi

Starting on simple foods such as veg and fruit was more of issue when weaning was advised at 3/4 months. At 6 months you can give your baby pretty much what you want.

There's a really good article, think it's on the Dr. Sears website about how it's actually better to stay away from processed grains (rusks etc) and to give baby fish/meat/etc in the early stages. I'm going to try and google it for for you

Sorry it's the Analytical Armadillo site (it's great btw)

They don't. I've done traditional weaning (mushed up normal foods, finger foods, fruit puree to put on weetabix) and I was told to avoid honey and choking hazards such as grapes but they can have everything else- just the same as BLW. Ds's first food was fish curry and roti and dd's was toasted currant t-cake.
