Ooops - think I have started weaning and ds2 is only 22 weeks...

Was eating a banana the other day with ds2 on my lap. Was also on th PC (multitasking!) and was a bit distracted. I then noticed that ds2 was wolfing down my banana I let him carry on and he ate the whole thing.

Now, I was planning to wait til 6 months and follow a mainly baby led weaning route, but since then I have also given him some chunks of avocado which also went straight down, and some more banana (he saw me with one and held his hands out for it and went "ooh ooh" like a monkey )

I read another thread on this recently, and I think people were saying the thing about BLW is that it is obviously the baby that is deciding what to eat - should I just follow ds2 lead? If so what else can I give him to eat by himself?

sounds good - I'd go with your gut feeling and carry on letting him have bits of food as you go - he's obviously happy!

pantomimEdam · 26/12/2006 10:49

22/24/26 weeks - not a huge amount in it really and he seems to be giving you a very clear message. I'd carry on. Impressed he was eating a whole banana though, I had to mash it up for ds at the same age!

DecktheWallacewithBoughsofHoll · 26/12/2006 18:35

Thanks any ideas what else finger food wise I ca give him? IIRC he can't have gluten or dairy yet?

ELF1981 · 26/12/2006 21:47

mango? my dd loved it

DecktheWallacewithBoughsofHoll · 26/12/2006 22:04

Thanks - that sounds good because it is quite a different taste IYSWIM.

dd loves the funniest things (like spinach and corn on the cob which i thought would be hard to eat) i would give carrot and brocolli

have you checked out the blog?

DecktheWallacewithBoughsofHoll · 26/12/2006 22:54

Oh yes good idea! I had a look at it a while ago when weaning seemed ages away.

Just googled it now. Excellent

vaguely remember pear and sweet potato being good first weaning foods

PinkTinsel · 28/12/2006 00:20

oh thank god i'm not the only one!

am veering between feeling guilty for letting him eat early and feeling all earth motherish and hippy for letting him wean himself.

should we start a 'wtf, my 4 month old weaned himself' support thread?!

PinkTinsel · 28/12/2006 00:22

btw, ds loves chunks of potato, banana, dd's g-f pasta with spinich, carrots and has gnawed on a few chunks of meat ( the xmas duck and boxing day pheasant, lol!)

whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 28/12/2006 02:05

see, surely this means that they'll know internally that their stupid little intestines and gut linings and whatnots are ready for food? i think the medical bods acknowledge that the gut lining closes over between 4-6 months, don't they?
i'd probably be super-cautious, though, and steer them clear from wheat until 6 months. but i'm not sure why, really.

whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 28/12/2006 02:06

by stupid little intestines, i mean lovely advanced little intestines, naturally...

fussymummy · 28/12/2006 02:10

If he's a happy little chap, then let him help himself!!!!
He probably got fed up with waiting, so thought do it myself!!! Bless!!
My kids were all fed between 13-18 weeks.

PinkTinsel · 28/12/2006 14:18

aitch, my dd is wheat intolerant so ds won't be having any til at least a year and i'm holding off gluten until she's given the all clear for coeliacs by the paeds next year to be safe. and she's cow's milk intolerant so he'll be getting her goats milk from 6 months not cow's. everything else is ok isn't it? (except obviously nuts and sweets of course!)

PinkTinsel · 28/12/2006 14:18

at stupid little intestines btw!

kiskidee · 28/12/2006 14:22

god i just wish my dd, 20 mos had an appetite like that. i am still trying to get her to sample avocado.

PinkTinsel · 28/12/2006 17:27

ds just devoured some sweet potato cut into chip shapes and peas squashed to prevent choking. he's now guzzling milk like he hasn't been fed in a week so definitely not affecting his bm intake, lol!

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 29/12/2006 03:29

can ds sit up yet? my ds is 6 months and want to do the blw thing but he cant sit up so don't know what to do.

DecktheWallacewithBoughsofHoll · 29/12/2006 10:09

Thanks, good suggestions PT. That's exactlyhow feel - a bit guilty, I keep thinking maybe I should stop giving him food until he is 26 weeks, ut then i give in. Also slighty embarrassed as I have been preaching to everybody about waiting til 6 months

LOL aitch, def advanced little intestines, if you please

wewishyouetcetc - hecan sit up unsuppoerted for a very short time with his hands down. He can sit fine in a highchair. I think they say the only have to be sitting supported, but i may be wrong

OP posts:
PinkTinsel · 29/12/2006 10:43

we wish, ds is like wallace's ds, he can sit unsupported for short periods but is fine for long stretches in the highchair.

if you think he's ready why not have him sitting on your lap as you eat with some suitable food within reach and see does he go for it himself.... that's how both ours let us know they were ready.

wallace am also very at all the people i ranted too that i wasn't feeding ds til 6 months, lol

PinkTinsel · 29/12/2006 12:00

he just had pear and a rice cake for breakfast (wasn't going to give him anything as i wanted to keep going slowly but he was in such a cross foul mood i gave him a piece of pear and he started giggling and devoured it..... guess i'll have to up to 2 small meals a day

Wallace · 30/12/2006 20:51

Had some pear and a banana for supper tonight. I have honestly never seen a banana be guzzled so quickly - how on earth does he instinctively know what to do with food. As soon as he sees food close by he shouts for it with his hands grabbing, as soon as he gets it it is straight in his mouth

Another plus he slept for almost 12 hours the other night after a banana...!

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2006 23:50

I was just about to start a thread about whether I can give my DS finger food yet as he's only 22 weeks. He's been on purees for a couple of weeks and he's really keen on trying to feed himself. I think you lot have answered my question and I might try I think. Don't you all worry about them choking though?

I have read quite a lot that they need to be able to sit unsupported before you wean. That would rule out a heck of a lot of 6 month old babies I think. My DS can't balance well enough yet to sit unsupported but he does very well in a highchair, though I tend to use a bumbo at the moment.

FairytaleOfNewNORKSBRIDE · 31/12/2006 00:09

When I had my first DD, weaning was advised between 4 & 6 months - but not to leave it too late as babies get fussier and more reluctant to try new things.

By the time I had DS1, the advice had changed to 'do not wean before 6 months'.

FWIW I weaned all 3 DCs at 5mths but avoided the more allergenic foods until they were above the ages recommended. They were all ready for food and self-feeding - DS1 was eating toast for breakfast by 6 months!
