DS (28 weeks) was having between 30-35oz a day. when we started him on solids it stayed between 24 and 28 oz, but this week is has dropped right down - has only had 10 (very hard fought)so far today. he was started on solids 3 weeks ago.

he generally eats his solids well (though refused breakfast today), but i don't think is eating enough solids or drinking enough milk. he hasn't gained any weight in past 2 weeks. He's very happy and isn't hungry - perfectly happy between meals and milk, but will only take a couple of oz, and then screams if you bring the bottle anywhere near him.

I am worried and stressed. has anyone been through this and have any words of comfort or advice?

sorry - shameless bump

been trying not to worry too much as he has gone off milk a bit before when he had a cold - but this seems to be sustained, with him taking less every day

hv suggested giving him a baby yoghurt made with follow on milk after his savoury meals but haven't found anything like this in the supermarkets - after extensive searching. Would ordinary full fat yoghurt help?

would be really grateful for some ideas

Sorry can't help much as my DD is only 23 wks. Her feeds seem to have reduced slightly at mo though not certain as BF.
They say that as long as they have plenty of wet nappies its ok I think....
Hope this bumps for you if nothing else !

lulumama · 22/12/2006 19:17

he will eat / drink his milk if hungry...maybe cut back his solids a bit? offer yoghurt, cheese, make him food with lots of dairy

DD used to faff around with milk & solids, slow wieght gain and sometimes weight loss.

but she met all her developmental milestones, and was happy & contecnt, just not a hungry baby
dont; stress..the more you are stressed, he will pick up on it and become more agitated

offer meeals , milk etc as you would and if no joy, leave it and try again at the next feed

thanks for the bump gonechristmascrackers - and thanks lulumama - good to know that your dd went through this but is fine!

it had all started so well with offering solids - he seemed to like everything but still be drinking the same amount of milk but it has all changed - I hope that maybe it's a phase and he will regain his appetite for milk at some point

Also try his formula on his cereal, I used to give ds half a weetabix soaked in his milk! Also remember that they do go off milk a little, because they are getting calories from the solids too, don't worry too much it will pick up again, my ds dropped from 32oz a day right down to 16 oz a day, he now 13 months and take 20oz daily! plus yogurt, you can offer fromage frais. If you feel that you want him to take more milk you'll have to cut back on the solids, and do not offer other drinks i.e. juice, it is maybe a good idea to get him used to sipping some water with his meals.

WeaselMum · 22/12/2006 19:49

that's really reassuring, thanks Mum2..

we've always offered sips of water with meals - he never takes more than 1 or (rarely) 2 oz so I don't think it's interfering with his milk intake

was thinking about fromage frais but had been avoiding it because of the sugar? think he will like it though!

Been through this with ds and dd. Had to stuff ds full of yoghurt (and I mean stuff, 3-4 adult size Thick n Creamies every day!).

Dd is 24 weeks and have been trying her with bits of fruit, and she is doing the same thing-2oz and then mouth firmly shut, unless it's goodies. Any attempt to encourage more milk results in instant screaming. Have tried giving less fruit, but mouth still firmly shut.

Sometimes tearing my hair out, and sometimes going with it. She is a real pig and is gaining weight well. Have tried putting as much milk as poss into her fruit, but still know she is not having enough. Am counting weeks until she can take dairy products. You can give Greek yoghurt with your own fruit puree if you are worried about sugar.

Ds survived and is huge for his age so I don't worry too much about dd, but still get fed up with it

it's so stressful and frustrating, isn't it? I try really hard not to let him see how upset I get - just have to get up and have a walk around with him sometimes to calm us both down! Occasionally after a break he will take a bit more.

Yes very frustrating, particularly that high pitched squeal at the approach of bottle.

Dbro has accused me of giving her an eating disorder already! Don'tknow whether to be or

Mind you have to say the taste and smell of her formula makes me gag, so am not suprised she has gone off it. What gives me hope is she generally takes a large bottle before bed and again at dreamfeed. However get very concerned about her fluid intake during the day, but very loathe to offer anything else in case she goes of milk all together.

Very very wearing......

fizzbuzz · 23/12/2006 09:05

Dd has has 1/2 oz this morning... and sreamed her head off at sight of bottle.

fizzbuzz · 23/12/2006 09:06

Sorry screamed...really must check messages

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 23/12/2006 09:07
