Ok try to keep this brief.....

DD is 6 months have been weaing for a while on HV recommendation as she has reflux and was prem!

She has b'fast, dinner and pud and tea! However have only given her fruit and veg so far and pureed really smooth.

Tried to give her some mashed veg and she gagged on it, but now thinking she was doing it on purpose as she's eaten stuff she likes with lumps in.

Also shes rejecting or gagging on things she's not use to leaving me with a small repitoire of options!
Also just read about baby led weaning somnewhere and it mentioned fussy eating?

AAARRRGGGHHHHH What do I do, just persevere and go with the eat what you're given or eat nowt approach or give her what she wants?!!?

ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!!!!

I'd say only puree for little ones that small; especially if prem

step back from mashing imo

Cappuccino · 19/12/2006 19:42

wouldn't say that a 6 month old is mature enough to start doing that on purpose

merrylissiemas · 19/12/2006 19:43

ds used to do that with fruit until i tried it with formula in, then just reduced the amount of formula til it was just fruit.

figgypud · 19/12/2006 19:47

Cheers

Thing is she doesn't do it with all lumpy food?
Shes fine with all completely smooth purees will just spit it out if she doesn't like it.

But she gags on some lumpy food and not others? So she will gag on potatoes just mashed but not carrots? ODD HUH?

vecause she's obviously very intelligent and she knows that mash potato tastes great and that pureed potato tastes like wall paper paste...

iPodForLifeNotJustForChristmas · 19/12/2006 19:54

feed her more pies!!!!!!!!!! !!!

merrylissiemas · 19/12/2006 19:54

have you tried mixing the potato with carrot?

iPodForLifeNotJustForChristmas · 19/12/2006 19:59

mash tayto can be quite dry - mix it with some milk - thats how I do mine and I'm 27!!!

Sure its not just c-rap cooking!???

DizzyBinterWonderland · 19/12/2006 19:59

how prem was she? what is her adjusted age?

you said you've looked into BLW. have you tried her with any finger foods?

figgypud · 19/12/2006 20:09

Tried mixing it with milk, think she is just clever, although I press potato through a sieve rather than blend it
Ok for example at her grandparents house she eat carrot just masked with a fork yet today at home did the same and she kept gagging on it!

RE: BLW no haven't tried the finger food thing yet because I'm worried out the fact she gags on mashed food let alone finger food, Oh and has no teeth yet: any day soon though I Guess?

she doesn't need teeth to eat finger food.

you might find she takes to finger foods better than purees because she's in control of it. of course stay close to her. don't panic if she gags, they gag to stop them choking. the gagging brings the bits that are too big forward rather than letting it go down her throat. when my dd gags i find doing chewing faces at her really helps keep me calm and keeps her focussed on chewing not panicing. she doesn't gag now she's 7 months.

babies can gag very easily on purees because they are used to doing a sucking action with their milk. so you spoon feed the puree in and they try to sort of suck it back, hence, they gag.

i did mention though, about her age with her being prem? you should wait til she has good head control, can sit up quite well, no lolling in her high chair, and has co ordination to put things in her mouth easily.

figgypud · 19/12/2006 20:17

She was only 4 weeks prem but had stopped growing for at least 2 weeks before that, don't know if that makes a difference?

Her head control and hand to eye co-ordination is about right for her age though I think she can sit unaided for a short period of time but still v.wobbly!

GIVE HER PIES...

DeckthehallsLaDiDaDi · 19/12/2006 20:22

I'm doing babyledweaning with my dd who was over 7 weeks prem. I've been weaning since 26 weeks uncorrected and although it took a while to get going and is very messy she's doing really well now. She loves broccoli florets, satsuma segments, bread with cream cheese etc.

Just wanted to let you know that there is another way!

figgypud · 19/12/2006 20:24

Cheers deckthehalls!
Doing a "big" shop thursday so can get lots of goodies in!

Ipod: good idea

may be worth a try figgy. try giving her some soft cooked carrot sticks. see how she goes. or broccoli is good, nice big fluffy bits she can grab easily.

iPodForLifeNotJustForChristmas · 19/12/2006 20:27

fIGGY - Griffin loves his broccoli - steamed and it almost falls apart in their mouths!

figgypud · 20/12/2006 18:37

GOOD NEWS
Thanks for all you're advice
Evie ate fish, mash and beans followed by banana which she practically fed herself needed a bit of help with no gagging YEAH [FGRIN]
