I started weaning a a few weeks ago and all is going really well apart from the fact ds2 gets constipated, he was so constipated last week i decided to completely stop feeding solids and just breastfed. It took 5 days for the blockage to clear and for him to stop crying when he poos.
I started him back on solids on friday, just giving one meal a day and he's not done a poo since.
I am only feeding him fruit and non starchy veg .
anyone got any advice?

both my dds were exactly the same - and it was horrible when they screamed and went purple trying to pass something. we found the best thing was prune juice (can buy from tesco) - added a little to the food and it really seemed to do the trick. looks ghastly and couldn't face trying it myself but dd2 never turned her nose up at the food that it was in. might be worth a try. dd1 had lactulose instead and i hated the whole giving medicine thing so was really determined to do it as naturally as possible this time round. hope that helps x

Does he drink much water? You might need to make sure he drinks water with the solid meal. When bf, it is easy not to worry about other fluids but when you introduce solids I think you need to make sure they get some extra fluid too.

What fruit? Apparently banana can be a constipation culprit, but pear is supposed to be quite good for easing it. I'm afraid i can't speak from experience because if anything bothers my DS's bowels, it is usually with the opposite effect.

One of my twins had a similar problem when we started weaning and I was also reluctant to give her medicine. The chemist sold me glycerin suppositories which I used when things got desperate (5+ days). They are not exactly medicinal, just help "ease the flow" so to speak! I was completely traumatised trying to use them but DD didn't even seem to notice and it worked within half an hour.

Her little body seemed to sort itself out after a while. I now find pureed fruit helps after her meal if she hasn't been for a day - apple, pear, etc.

My only tip is that for some reason bananas always constipated ds, and in fact continued to do so until just a few months ago (he's 18m now). Without fail, which is a shame because he loved eating them. It might be a complete red herring in your case, but perhaps there's one or two foods doing it which you could eliminate for the time being. Also, diluted fresh orange juice was recommended as a cure for constipation. HTH!

phew he has been, its wasn't too hard either.

fluffy - thats a good point he drinks no water. I am staying away from bananas for now too.

i think ill give prune juice a go too, he has tried water but i don't think he actually drank much of it, he kinds just spat most of it out lol

Also, try pears and kiwi's for constipation. Like banana's also stay clear of apples as these also make the poo's hard.
