The usual advice is to be careful with eating leftover rice of any kind as it can grow nasty bacteria very quickly. If you do freeze it, make sure that it is cold, but don't leave it sitting around before you put in the freezer. When you come to use it, make sure it is heated very thoroughly. I used to freeze risotto when dd was little and it was always OK, but I did always reheat it very thoroughly.

have ben led to believe from various MN threads that rice becomes spawn of the devil if not eaten within 25 seconds of being cooked

No wouldn't risk it. Rice can grow nasties very easily.

moondog · 11/12/2006 18:27

It's fine to freeze.
You're all barking.

fizzbuzz · 11/12/2006 18:28

Right, spawn of the devil it obviously is! Can I cook it fresh and give it her, if I let it cool a bit? Or does it have to be eaten boiling hot?!

Is it OK to reheat it.....or not?

How weird, I've always cooked batches and frozen everything! My DD is still alive 10 months later and has definitely not caught a nasty lergy (sp?) from reheated rice. Mind you, I'm a very bad mummy as I never ever sterilised anything either...

The only thing with reheating rice or risotto or curries with rice already in is that it goes all dry and in the microwave, but just add a knob of butter/splash of milk/spoonful of nat yogurt and Bob's yer uncle (or is he the builder?).

kiskidee · 12/12/2006 10:51

the trick to reheating rice is to add a bit of fluid, water or milk even if weaning. it makes the rice steam soft again.

same thing with reheating pasta or even flour tortillas. just wet the tortilla under the tap and put on a hot frying pan.

rice doesn't grow bacteria very fast if it is boiled or steamed. it is mostly starch. fats like cocoanut milk (yum) and proteins makes its shelf life shorter. I keep rice in the fridge for up to a week if it is put in fairly promptly an i only take out the portion i need to reheat.

fizzbuzz · 12/12/2006 11:04

So, is it safe then?

I did / do.

Nevef had any problems.

In fact I freeze anything and everything.

miao · 12/12/2006 11:14

In my view and from experience, yes!

I freeze and reheat nearly everything (rice included) and no sign of any problems. If you're a workaholic and want to create work, by all means cook everything fresh on the day - from scratch. I'm sure home-prepared frozen meals are a lot better than long-life jars anyway.

catsmutha · 12/12/2006 18:20

I always worry about this esp with feeding dd but one day i saw the lovely Ken Hom on telly talking about egg fried rice. This is, of course, reheated rice and if it was that dangerous they wouldnt serve it in restaurants for fear of mass murder! He said as much, just reiterated that you do have to make sure it is heated through properly however you reheat it, to kill any potential bacteria.
