7 month old keeps choking

Ds2 is finding lumps in food very difficult - he always gags on any lumps, this evening he was genuinely choking - had tears running down his face - so scary! I know you're supposed to introduce lumps, but this wasn't really lumpy - I had whizzed it all up, just a few slightly less pureed pieces. Any suggestions?

My ds2 was just the same - he was very funny with food till about 3 years old - in complete contrast to ds1 who was a glutton.

Is your ds enjoying the food? If so I'd just try to slow down a bit.

tortoiseBells · 10/12/2006 20:06

He does seem to be enjoying it - I guess there's no rush to have him eating meat and 3 veg! I've had two children at the opposite end of the spectrum - ds1 eats nothing, dd eats everything, so I wonder if I'm now going to have the amazing liquid diet child!

sometimes it looks like they're choking but they're just gipping a bit to move the food back to the front of their mouth. it's a natural action to stop them from actually choking, ie food getting stuck in their throat.

we're doing blw with dd so do get a fair bit of this gipping. what i found works for her is to do chewing faces at her. so rather than getting panicky, go yum yum, chew chew, this makes her relax and remember to cheww rather than gip IYSWIM. when MIL or my family are eating with her they often think she's choking when she's moving the food around, but they're used to it now and we all do chew faces. she hardly ever even gips now. she's 7 months.

obviously if she were actually to choke i wouldn't do chew faces at her!

J was the same at 7 months - I kept him with purees for another 2 weeks then tried again - he took to them fine them, might not be quite ready yet.

how is he at finger foods?

worcestercaroline · 10/12/2006 21:00

my dd was the same, she is nearly 9 months and just starting to "chew" her food, its only in the last few days that she has managed lumpy food and due to the nightmare that I had getting her to eat in the 1st place I am letting her have 2 pureed meals a day and 1 with lumps. I dont want her to be put off food due to rushing her. I would let him go at his own rate and hold back slightly on lumpy food. Am not saying i'm right but I waited until dd was showing signs of "chewing" her puree before introducing lumps

deaconblue · 10/12/2006 21:12

Ds, nearly 8 months, is exactly the same. Any food he puts into his own mouth - finger foods etc - he chews and doesn't choke on. anything I put in has to be smooth or he gags, chokes and chucks his entire meal and milk (he looks like that horrible old woman in the Little Britain sketch with the projectile vomit!!) I've decided to leave it a few more weeks, increase his finger foods and then try again.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 10/12/2006 21:15

tortoise- does he seem to choke on finger food as well or just food you feed him on a spoon?

munz · 10/12/2006 21:17

SBS - that's exactly how J was at 7 months, but 7.5 he was having lumpier foods, 8.5 it was mashed up a bit more and then at 9 months we went with the BLW as he seemed to prefer eating himself/feeding himself.

as someone said to me on here when I asked - might be a case of bubba's not quite ready yet - but will be in a few weeks- after all 2 weeks in the workd of baby development is a long time

tortoiseBells · 10/12/2006 23:40

He's not over keen on finger food, but doesn't seem to choke on it so much.

I hate weaning! I was really scared this evening, even though he only choked for maybe 10 seconds - I was totally panic stricken!

I'll try taking things a bit more slowly, make sure everything's a bit more finely mushed! Thanks for replies everyone!

shoppingbags, there is a theory as to why that happens... wanna hear it?

basically the thinking is that if the baby feeds themselves they know it's a solid lump so they are in control of the food in their mouth and move it around. sometimes they gag, but because it is a solid lump they can cough it forward. nothing serious.
but if you are spoon feeding puree then the baby responds more like it's milk and sucks it right to the back of their mouth prior to swallowing, which makes them more likely to choke. supposedly, anyway. i don't know, obviously, cos dd never had purees.

deaconblue · 11/12/2006 15:11

~Interesting Aitch - it certainly does seem to be that he knows what to do when he's in control of it. Can't get him to eat a meal with his fingers though (only seems to be happy to play around with rice cakes etc).

hiliry · 14/12/2006 21:28

i feel even worse after reading this thread. Ds is 13 months and still gags when i feed him lumps. he eats jarred food for 6 months plus.

whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 15/12/2006 12:31

ach hiliry, don't waste your time feeling bad... no-one goes to primary school eating jars, he'll get there. have you tried finger foods? what does he think of a banana?

tortoiseBells · 15/12/2006 12:39

Ds2 is definitely better with finger food. I've a feeling that he is improving with really soft lumps, like soft banana, but finds things like green beans harder to swallow.

my dd is nearly a year and really just chews on green beans but pops the beans into her mouth. it's very cute. i'd have thought that beans would be a bit stringy for someone with no teeth to properly eat.
