What's the best food for a pair of messy 8mo's when out?

DS will start nursery soon and it's a trek home so it would make more sense to take dtd's out for lunch. Is there good non messy weaning foods? Everything we eat at home is gummed to a paste then somehow spread on self/ high chair requiring a change of clothes despite bib and copious cleaning of everything. Spoon feeding/ finger food both equally messy.

What time will they be leaving nursery and when will they have milk and food there?

A banana and savourary muffin used to be my default - maybe ds was a bit older!
A lump of cheese and sometimes God forbid a pouch.

Can you give them a non messy type finger food to hold and mess with whilst spoon feeding yourself in between (so they don't grab the spoon?) or accept it, take a massive bib, loads of wipes some duct tape and don't stress too much - most places have plenty of experience of clearing up after messy children!

Sorry I meant DS will be 3 so will go to school nursery for a couple of hours every afternoon. It takes a while for us to get back so I thought it would make more sense to plan lunch out and then a play for dtd's 8mo and then they can have nap later whilst I do dinner and play with DS.

They are determined spoon grabbers DTD1 sort of laps at it like a kitten/ blows raspberries and keeps excellent time bashing it on high chair tray. DTD2 likes to hold hers with two hands using front fingers to shove food in her mouth. It's adorable but really messy. A banana and savoury muffin sounds lovely they'll happily eat brioche/ scone so that could work do you have a recipe? They also really like sucking tomato sauce from pizza crusts, obviously can't take pizza crusts out and about but any recipes with that sort of flavour?

Self feeding stuff which is not too gooey:

-Pieces of cheese
-Rice cakes
-Bread/sandwiches
-Savoury muffins (google for recipes)
-'Mini pizzas' made from breakfast muffins cut in half and topped with tomato sauce/puree, grated cheese, herbs and optional finely chopped veggies, grilled.
-soft oaty bars

Anything that has to be spoon fed is always going to have a high chance of mess. If it's a 'favourite' food though I find it has less chance of mess as they want to eat it more rather than play with it.
