Grumbly When Weaning - what's your experience???

Santamander · 05/12/2006 08:50

We've just begun to wean our wee one (17 weeks today).
Started him a couple of days ago on baby rice a couple of times a day.
He's been particularly grumbly and out of sorts.

I'm guessing (rather arbitrarily) that this is normal due to his little insides doing backflips to deal with solids.

What are your experiences of this interesting time???

looking forward to replies. I am really wondering why Alex is so grumbly! teething?

tinkersbelles · 05/12/2006 23:07

How come you've started weaning so early ? New guidelines say 26 weeks.... He may well be teething or might just be hungry if he's not getting as much milk as he needs/wants. I'm not a professional though, sure someone else will pop in at some point soon...

colditz · 05/12/2006 23:18

He might be constipated. Um, the rice might be upsetting his stomach.

Santamander · 06/12/2006 09:00

We started weaning early at the advice of the HV.
He's had a rough start and is a very hungry baby. The idea is that the baby rice as a supplement will help settle him.

I'm sure it is his tummy getting used to it. He is having trouble passing things through and it's causing him to grumble.

Wonder how long it will take his system to adjust...

Baby rice isn't really very good for them, and your HV is talking cobblers. I'd stop and wait a while.

moondog · 06/12/2006 09:01

Hello????
If he's bad tempered,he probably doesn't like it!!

Your HV is a loon.
Ignore her.

Baby rice doesn't have as many calories in it as milk for a start and tastes like glue.

Throw it out,it's crap.

Santamander · 06/12/2006 09:31

I've tried this baby rice a few times and it's quite pleasant - very runny and mixed with his milk

OP posts:
Santamander · 06/12/2006 09:42

Why a loon?

4 - 6 months for introducing some solids is general adivce tailored to the specific child.

he doesn't grumble when he eats it - he really loves eating it and looks longingly at our food when we are eating.

he is fussy at other times and i just imagined it must be his body adjusting to some solids in his diet.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2006 09:51

4-6 months is very outdated advice. The WHO has been saying 6 months for ages.

I bet he looks longingly at anything you are doing - does he watch you drive? Does this mean he's ready to drive?

Santamander · 06/12/2006 09:56

yes he is driving

Santamander · 06/12/2006 09:57

and playing golf

BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 10:10

If he's grumpy, it's not agreeing with him.

Your HV is giving you outdated advice.

Stop giving him food.

Wait till he's bigger.

Happier baby.

(Btw, milk has MORE calories in it than these early weaning foods, so he's probably hungrier too)

eenysugarplumfairy · 06/12/2006 10:12

oh dear!

Santamander · 06/12/2006 10:38

time to speak to the HV perhaps??

maybe we won't call her a loon though, eh?

OP posts:
BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 11:01

Possibly best not.

No need to speak to her though - he's your baby - if it's upsetting him, you won't be doing him any harm by stopping - in fact, quite the opposite.

Santamander · 06/12/2006 12:05

Thanks Hunk.

He's always been a fussy baby though, so it's so difficult to tell what is upsetting him.

He's gone from one thing to the next, so when the HV said that a small amount of solids at 4 mths would help settle him, that's what we've done.

moondog · 06/12/2006 14:23

Settle him???
Weigh him down more like!

You try eating a vat of wallpaper paste and see what is does for your general disposition.

cori · 06/12/2006 14:38

My DS is also seems quite grumpy as well. He is almost 7 months and have started weaning him over the past few weeks. He was also quite consitpated for a few days, so that could be it.

Santamander · 06/12/2006 15:29

i was always dreading tasting baby rice because of these continual references to wallpaper paste, gruel, glue, and so on...

then i tasted it and was pleasantly surprised.
it's watery yes, but that's down to the person preparing it - it certainly had no similarities to all the things i've been warned about

maybe its a brand thing!?! this is Organix Baby Rice

CORI - How is he now??

OP posts:
MiaMamma · 06/12/2006 15:43

I thought I was the only one who liked the taste of baby rice!!!

Santamander · 06/12/2006 15:45

It really isn't too bad!

OP posts:
MrsChristmasboo · 06/12/2006 18:08

Hi Santa i've had this with ds2 and he is now a lot better. I weaned him at 16 weeks on advice of the paed we saw.... He is very happy now apart from the teeth and sleeps well at night. He will adjust.

Oh where do i post my Christmas list?

glamourbadger · 06/12/2006 20:59

My twins went a bit odd when I started weaning - I guess it was just their little bodies adjusting to solids. It didn't last long though, maybe a couple of weeks? I found it really affected their sleep. They were sleeping through at night but started to wake up and make hooting sounds at various intervals! They were also v unsettled during their lunchtime sleep. They settled down after a couple of weeks though and resumed sleeping through the night.

I think you have to go with your gut instinct - I had no previous baby experience but just knew it was the right time to wean. Most of the advice I've had from my HV has been pretty dreadful, not to mention contradictory!

cori · 06/12/2006 21:57

He is still a bit whiney. Cant put it down to anything else. He is not overly interested in food.

Charliebird · 07/12/2006 12:16

Hi Santamander
Its a fun time this weaning lark! Have got an 8 month old - started weaning at 19 weeks (on HV advise) Went well until a few weeks ago but those issues are for another thread!!
Just some info tho - the reason the WHO is saying 6 months for weaning is that its guidelines cover the WORLD! which includes the 3rd world and covers countries which have very unsanitary conditions - so to give babies the best start they say breast is best until 6 months then start weaning. However some guidelines you don't get to hear about is that if your baby has reached 15llbs then usually there tummys need more! And for some babies thats around 4 months. So if your little bundle has reached that weight that is why the HV has recomended it! It took my little man a good week to get used to the different texture and the swallowing action!
Good luck & don't panic - your really giving him first tastes at this stage!
