I apologise as I am sure this has been asked 100 times or more but can I mash all food for my 6 month old - I do have a 5 yrs old but for some reaosn just cannot remember I can also not remember worrying so much about the whole 'food thing'. Do I need to be aware of the ingredients I am putting in my food for e.g in shepeherds pie I put Tomato puree and gravy/oxo does this have too much salt in? If I have Spag Bol froma jar I am assuming this is a def. no no due to salt. what about tinned custard do I need to be checking the ingredients for things to avoid. If I mash veg up can I add a tiny bit of butter/marg or is it just breast milk/formula. I am sorry to sound so dumb I just dont have a clue what I can and cant give. Thank you for all being so patient with my rambling as much advice and info is gratefully rec'd!

Oxo and Gravy have too much salt.
Butter / Marg is fine.
Most things can just be mashed but watch for the stuff in jars because of the salt.
I hope this helps. My 7 month son doesnt seem to be doing badly on it!

thanks maxwellsmum.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of thing is your son eating now? is it everything you eat ?

my dd is 6 months and eats all "normal" food mashed up with a fork, though she much prefers finger food! i'd keep off the oxo if i were u, and also any other jar or packet adult type food, but if u've made it from scratch then mash away!

You can just give your child table scraps at six months, and skip mashing altogether.

I wouldn't give spag bol from a jar, but I'd happily give homemade food that had a bit of oxo in it.

I actually make all his meals up a week in advance. (And i know HV says you shouldnt but it works brilliantly for us).
He eats a huge range of food, tomato & courgette pasta, beef & sweetpotato, potato & leek puree/mash.
I'm no whizz in the kitchen and i have to admit the majority is out of Annabel Karmel's 'Meal Planner'. Its absolutely fantastic and all the recipes are easy to do....and they go up to toddlers too.
Its only about £10...well worth it.

You can get A.Karmel's Meal Planner from Amazon for £7.79

I give dd3 (6.5 months) everything the other girls have, mashed, with some bits as finger food. eg she feeds herself roast potatoes, roast carrots and roast chicken but if I give the girls macaroni cheese I mash it for dd3. If I give them pasta with tuna and tomato sauce I give dd3 some bits of pasta but if it looks like she can't manage i mash up the grub and spoon feed her.

I wouldn't give processed food to her (except breakfast cereal) because of the salt. Although she really loves marmite sandwiches
