What % Of Each Food Group Should I Be Giving?

Hiya,
Im trying to plan DSs meals abit more so I can include everything he needs (im very forgetful, so its best if I do a plan!) and wondered what you need to be giving really. I know for adults (well, I think!) its 1/3 carbs, 1/3 fibre, the other 1/3 split into something else I cant remember...fats and sugar etc. 2 portions of fish a week, red meat no more than twice a week... that sort of thing. Obviously its probably higher % of fats... but im not sure.

Thanks!

Oh, DS is nearly 8 months.

at this stage you shouldn't worry too much

just try to give him a variety of flavours

high fat - like cheese, milk, yog etc = all good

once he's turned 1 you should think about regular intake of protein

carbs tend to look after themselves, what with bread, cereals etc.

Its just I noticed he has toast and pasta alot... then I give steak or roast beef and worry im overloading him with meat... then I give fruit, and think im not giving enough fat... [confused emoticon needed!]

seriously, don't worry too much

calcium still the most important part of his diet

if he's eating and enjoying the things you mention, give yourself a pat on the back!

not doubting that it's a good and sensible question pruni

but imo at 8 months not a major concern

Tutter · 16/11/2006 17:41

is he still taking a couple of good milk feeds a day? if so, not a concern

Whilst your baby will need to eat more often than you do, he or she will gradually come to eat the same variety and textures of foods that you eat. Their diet should consist of foods from all four main food groups, carbohydrates, proteins, fats oils and sugars as well as fruit and vegetables.

Found that so far...

I wouldnt worry about it until nearer 12 months, maybe later, depending on how much bm he is still having.

From Kellymom:
"Breastmilk should make up the majority of baby?s nutrition through the end of the first year. At some point toward the end of the first year, most babies will gradually begin to need more iron and zinc than that provided by breastmilk alone - at that point, additional nutrients can be obtained from small amounts of solids."

I have also read somewhere...cant remember where though, sorry...that if babies are offered a range of foods they will naturally eat a pretty balanced diet..so as your Lo gets older & starts to get more nutrients from solids then imo as long as you offer food from different groups they will eat what they need.

DS (now 29 months) still has bm quite a lot so I dont worry about balance so much atm as I know it will pick up the slack. The only thing I try to do is get in 5 portions of frtui/veg per day. But I didnt start doing that until almost 18 months, which was the earliest he started having 3 meals a day plus snacks regularly & so it was the earliest it was feasibly possible.
