10 month old stuck on puréed baby food

Ds is 10 months old, he didn't really take to BLW so I had to swap to purring his food, he then started to enjoy it. I've been trying to get him to eat chunkier purées and he will to an extent but gets fed up half way through. He won't eat much finger food, he only seems to like carby things like toast, breadsticks, baby crisps etc. he won't eat fruit apart from grapes and bananas, won't even look at any vegetable sticks.

How do I get him to start eating a more varied diet, or is he doomed forever?!

Mine was a bit younger so maybe easier to trick but I use to but the new food onthe back of the spon with something he liked on the front, then over a few spóons I reduced the amount to the nicer food.

Similar with making the mash I gradually added less of then nice stuff.

Again at a younger age, but mine would sometimes get fed up with eating just because it is too slow and he was hungry, so metimes I would give a little milk with the meal to help him along. If he is havin lots of formula or brest milk I wouldnt worry about what else he eats (assuming you aren't pureeing macky d's of course!)

Don't worry too much about the veg. I remember reading an article on the bbc about how children have more sensitive taste buds. They often find vegetables bitter. As long as he's eating the fruit he gets the vitamins. (It's not a problem for children to have more sugar).

My DD1 is also big on carbs. I think they are predisposed to it because of the energy they provide.

The only thing I see is a problem is whether he eats protein. You didn't mention it in your post.

They get even pickier when they get to 2yo. So relax and as long as he's eating fruit/veg, carbs, protein then it's all good.

I mean try introduce him to more fruit as you mite have more success than veg. Look for sweeter ones. I'm guessing from his choice of grapes and bananas. It will be strawberry season soon. Melons are often quite sweet. Same with pineapples though it's acidic might cause an allergic reaction. Same with citrus.

Might be the texture/holding it. My dd holds a "baby banana" by the skin but rejects slimy slices of big banana! Dry food can feel nicer.
I make little sandwiches with thin bread or mini rice cakes, put anything slimy in the middle. It works well for my 7 month dd.

Yes he is still breastfeeding and likes at least 3 feeds in the day so I know he is getting nutrition there. He will eat scrambled egg sometimes but otherwise he's not too good at protein unless it's hidden in a purée. I really want him to be able to eat finger foods more but he just won't entertain much of it! Do you think I just need to persevere?

Good idea about putting it between bread, I will try that. At least that way he will be subtly getting used to new flavours.

Have you tried cream cheese, peanut butter or hummus in sandwiches?

TwoLittleTerrors · 08/05/2015 19:35

squizita which bran do mini rice cakes do you use?

Tesco or Boots own brand for babies, just as I pass those shops often. Smile

don't worry. persevere with the finger foods, and keep giving him new things to try even if he doesn't like them. put it on the plate anyway, just a small bit. don't make an issue of it. i'd probably put a plate of finger foods in front of him while you're preparing his meal. if he's enjoying playing / sucking it / putting it in his ears, let him carry on for as long as possible before you feed him his puree.

I've found lightly toasted bread also works!
and Matzo crackers (the ones with no salt - just flour and water baked) are great.
