DD getting rash of purees.....ideas/advice?

Hi all
Will keep this as short as possible!
Starting weaning DD 3/4 weeks ago, started on baby rice and she has had basic fruit/veg purees!
After eating her first shop bought pureed fruit (she had all ingrediants in it seperatly) came out in a blotchy rash over face about 5 mins after eating it and went within an hour, no other obvious symtoms!
Took her to docs who sent back food to manufacturer and told us to carry on as we are doing! If it happens again with other foods they would refer to dietican for tests!
Gave her pureed pear yest (which she has had loads of) and it happened again took her back to docs but saw a different one who told us to avoid pear for the time being!
Now its happened today with carrot!!!!!
I have only used organic stuff too so its nothing on the food itself!?

What am I supposed to do not feed her hardly anything?
Has anyone else had similar symptoms?

Can't really offer any advice. Maybe you could try reverting to baby rice for a couple of days before starting again?

My dd did this with milk, tomatoes and oranges
Was advised by the dietician to stop anything that made her face red, then try it again at a later date.
By the time she was 18 months she was fine.
Ask your hv or gp to refer to dietician. Don't think it's anything to do with it being organic or not, just having food reactions.

bluejelly · 03/11/2006 21:51

It's supposed to be unusual to get a reaction to pear or apple by the way. Don't panic though, hopefully she will grow out of it like my dd ( who eats tomatoes, oranges and drinks loads of milk!)

Thanks you
Sometimes its just nice to have reassurance
Was suprised its happening off fruit/veg guess I though it would be more likely to happen with dairy, meat ect!

How old is dd? is she young enough to hold out untill you have seen someone?

JanenEvie · 05/11/2006 17:08

Hi littlepiggy! Shes only 20 weeks!
We were told to start weaning earlier as she is a premmie! (was born at 36 week weighing 4lb6!)
Carried on as told but today had a reaction to apple!....Seems neverending!
Only thing shes been 100% ok with so far is sweet potato!
We dont seem to be getting anywhere with the docs round here latest is that we were told "this just happens to some babies!"
Going to drop in to see HV on wednesday and see if we can get anywhere with her!
Its such a woory

is there any chance it is not the food, maybe washing up liquid, or somthing in the plastic?

lulumama · 06/11/2006 19:07

just a bit confused as why you were told to wean earlier as she was prem...surely it should have been later?? sorry...no help here....

maybe stick to milk as littlepiggie suggested? her gut might not be quite ready to cope with food yet......

sorry, not much help..

foxinsocks · 06/11/2006 19:07

I would just go back to square one. We had this problem with dd. She literally reacted to EVERYTHING. So we stopped. Went back to just milk and tried again a bit later and this time did it little bit by little bit (so first week just the rice, next week pear and rice, week after carrot and rice etc.).

I know it is boring and I know it sounds sort of bland but it really did work. I would also only let her have small amounts of the food at first - I'm not a medical person, but I was sure (at the time) that some of these symptoms were mainly because dd's digestive system was just not ready for solid food.

lulumama · 06/11/2006 19:11

if she was born at 36 weeks....and you started weaning her at 16 weeks or so....then really , wasn't she actually 12 weeks old due to being early? and current thinking is no solids until 26 weeks....the more i think about it, the more it seems she is not ready to handle food......milk is the best source of nutrition for a baby up to at least 6 months. i may well be barking up the wrong tree....but it seems like a possiblity

littlepiggie · 06/11/2006 19:18

I think babys born very early have not got enought iron to last 6 months, but i did not think 4 weeks was that early.

JanenEvie · 06/11/2006 19:47

Hi all thanks for the advice!
I had quite bad pre-eclampsia so my placenta had beed failing for at least 2 weeks when they induced me so Evie had effectively stopped growing! & yes littlepiggie you're right 36weeks is borderline prem!
I'm not sure why I was told to begin weaning earlier! I thought it was maybe to help her catch up weight wise but didn't ask But the iron thing sounds more likely!
foxinsocks did you have any other problems when going back to square one! Its taken us soooo long to sort out her sleeping ect I'm almost petrified of ballsing it all up again!

if it is the iron reserves you can switch her to follow on milk as has added iron..which is likely to be a better option as she is still under recommended weaning age..IMO

..my sis started weaning as LO very hungry...after 3 days gave up, went back to lots of milk and started again at 22 weeks....still earlier than recommend, but he is coping fine..whereas at 17 weeks he was very windy & had terrible tummy ache....he was 2 weeks early FWIW...

nearlythree · 06/11/2006 20:59

I was told that prem babies are often recommended to wean early, although no-one explained why. Are you still in touch with anyone from the hospital? That is where I would ask, assuming it is your hv who has told you to wean dd - get a second opinion.
