Baby food and mashed potato

My 10 month old has been a slow weaner! He's only just on 3 meals a day. The problem is savoury is not a favourite of his! He has finger food etc but I've tried him with jar foods and he tends to have a couple of spoons then grunts at the rest!

The last couple of days I've been adding a bit of mashed potato to the jar foods and he then wolfs it down. Is this bad practice or is it ok to carry on with this and gradual reduce the amount of mash in his food? Thanks.

Of course mash is fine!

I'd try to keep the skin on as that is where the nuitrition is. Just make sure there are no skin lumps.

Maybe he just prefers homemade? The jars are an odd flavour, I found they usually all taste the same regardless of the name on them. Keep the mashed potato and add somethin homemade to it - leftovers from your own dinner the evening prior?

Lovely thanks! He does normally eat what we eat in the evenings with a bit of mash. It's just lunch times when we are out and about that he has the jar food and I have to take mashed potato out with me!

At ten months he should be able to manage a mini sandwich and some cucumber sticks/fruit. Why dont you take something like that out with you? I wouldn't want to eat baby food either to be honest!

I also dont think 10 months is particularly slow.
Agree that you need to ditch the jars and offer normal food.

I would just take finger food out with you if he prefers that. Avocados and bananas are easy to grab and take whole and just open when he's hungry. Mash with some salmon flaked is easy to take in a pot. Steam some veg and take in a pot. You can just keep a few things from last nights dinner most of the time

I do find the problem is that when he picks at the finger food he isn't actually eating all that much so his milk levels aren't dropping. So I tend to spoon feed and then offer finger food after.

Milk should still be his main source of food though so that's fine. Ds's both still had around 4/5 feeds a day at this age

dementedpixie · 14/04/2015 09:27

a yoghurt, a sandwich and a banana would be good portable lunch items rather than having to take mashed potato out with you.

dementedpixie · 14/04/2015 09:29

I wouldn't say that milk would be a main source at 10 months. Both mine were down to 2 feeds at that age

Artandco · 14/04/2015 09:33

The NHS says that milk should still be main source of nutrition until over 12months.

Ds still has 2 breastfeeds at 3...

The HV told me (at the 10 month check) that I should be focussing on food rather than milk at this stage.

My DD has a balanced diet with vit D supplement, so I don't see the need for more than 1 milk feed a day as she gets calcium and nutrients from food.

I'm trying to wean her off milk feeds and introduce more food so it becomes the norm.

Lovelise · 14/04/2015 09:42

I must add she's nearly 12 months x
