1yr old dd still on bottle, refuses all cups/beakers - advice please?

dd is nearly 13 months old, will only accept her milk/juice/water from her bottle. i've tried all different manners of cups / beakers, but she point blankly refuses. she is starting to hold the bottle (she also has a trainer cup but with a normal teat on) by herself but just gets so upset when we try anything else. i can't not give her anything to drink.
we have been trying different receptacles for months and months to no avail - i have a cupboard full of them. BOOTS rub their hands with glee when i enter!
she doesn't have any teeth yet - is this the problem? am i doing something wrong? which is the best cup / beaker / bottle for me to go out and buy and try her on please? i feel so stupid and like i am failing!
should i just not worry?
i am due to pop out dd2 in feb so am desperate for dd1 to be a little bit more independant if she wants a drink.
all advice most gratefully welcome!!!!!

We've got a Tommee Tippee beaker with a longish spout. HV said don't get non-spill lids cos it's easier for LO to learn to drink (OK, Innocent smoothie all over your Ikea sofa IS a pain in the arse). DS now a dab hand at drinking from cups.
No teeth is nothing to do with not drinking from cup. DS has only just cut his first tooth (he's 1 on MOnday)

thanks iklboo, that was superfast! i just wondered with the teeth as a lot of the cups are sort of bite & suck instead of just plain suck. do you happen to know what age range tommee tippee you have please i.e 4m, 6m?

hi - dont beat yourself up. my eldest is 3 and he still has a bottle (he drinks from cups too, just prefers bottles for comfort) 2 yo also. 9month old just learning to hold bottle/cup himself.

if its trying to get her to hold it herslef, try this: find a semi reclined postion where you are not holding her - the car seat is good - and give the bottle when she is gagging for it (so to speak). she'll hold it up herself! if shes kind of reclined, theres not too much work to do, she just has to use her fists to push it up IYSWIM, and if its the car seat and theres no adult to hold it for her, she'll just do it herself.

at least, thats what happened accidentally with my 3.

might that work?

I know they do from 4 months - and they sell them in the big supermarkets too. They do all age ranges so you can "advance" once they've got the hang of it

hi napgal, ooh that does make me feel better, cheers.
she is getting a dab hand at actually picking it up & drinking herself, she just wont come off the teat. i've been so worried - all this, don't give juice in a bottle, and i see babies out all the time, who look much younger than maisie, merrily drinking away from their beakers and trainer cups.
tbh though iklboo, they all seem to be non-spill when i go on my little shopping expeditions. i try them out myself and they seem awfully hard to get the drink out.
i suppose i could force myself out on a little shopping trip tomorrow

No don't worry about it. My dd1 was still using a bottle at age 2 and refused to use anything else (I too have a cupboard full of every beaker ever made) She moved straight onto a cup & straw.
dd2 however is only 10 ,months and drinks out of beakers no problem, hence using my cupboard full of beakers..HOORAH!

So don't worry she'll be fine

NappiesGalore · 31/10/2006 15:20

yep - cupboard full of beakers/cups here too.

agree that all the lids seem pretty diff to get anything out of. and in fact, my older 2 more or less bypassed the lids stage and went from bottles to lid-less cups.

persistence and time will get you there, dont worry.

in fact, im such a alazy moo, ive discovered that if you bury your head in the sand/go with the flow long enough, they figure it out for themsleves anyway.

Iklboo · 31/10/2006 15:22

I'll check when I go home, but DS's lid is SOOOO easy to get stuff out of ;o)
Actually, come to think of it, I think it's the cup the HV's gave us as part of the weaning group. It's def a tommee tippee one though

maisiemoosmum · 31/10/2006 15:30

thanks all. it's such a weight off when you realise you're not on your own,

I'm having the same problem with ds2 16mths. Ds1 was off bottles by 13mths and ds2 just screams and screams when I try and give him a cup. Agree with Boots rubbing their hands with glee, we have every type of cup imaginable but he won't have any of it.

Your not alone

Trinityrhino · 31/10/2006 15:33

i wouldn't worry about it at all, my 19 month has milk in a bottle morning and vening and I would happily give her a boittle all the time if she wanted but she loves having her big sisters anywayup cups but I wouldn't mind if she didn't want to do it yet. dd1 had a bottle till she was 3 1/2 and that was all the time
