Oh, and what adult breakfast cereal can a 6 month old eat?

Porridge.

Look for sugar and salt and random chemically sounding things in the ingredient lists of things like Cheerios and steer clear, IMO.

You can get rice crispies with no sugar in, made by Kallo. Whizz them up in a blender if lumps are unpopular.

Spidermama · 31/10/2006 12:59

I soak oats and dried fruit in soya milk (any milk would do) overnight then whizz to make a thick smoothie.

donnie · 31/10/2006 13:12

weetabix with some mashed banana is popular here!plus the milk mixed in of course.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 31/10/2006 13:13

Weetabix and readybrek is what I fed ds (and still do at times) How about shreddies mashed up?

SAHMof1 · 31/10/2006 15:22

Do Weetabix have salt in them?

OP posts:
puffling · 31/10/2006 22:20

Yes they do, but I'm sure it's negligible and nothing else they're likely to eat in the day will have it added.

I did a piece of research on cereals earlier this year and all the wheat biscuit ie weetabix types got an amber warning light for salt under the Food Standards Agency traffic light scheme. So I'd check salt levels very carefully. Porridge or cereal designed especially for babies is probably your safest bet but still check out salt and sugar.

More than 1.25g salt per 100g product is 'salty' for adults. Babies should have as little salt as possible - the Food Standards Agency site will tell you the limits for children at different stages. URL is something like eatwell.gov.uk but google will find it.

Of the children's cereals, the chocolate flakes and rice crispy types generally came off worst for salt.

Stick to porridge while you can before they become addicted to special treat coco pops on holiday!
BTW beware Ready Brek, especially if you use cloth nappies/wipes it sticks like hell on the way out!!

SAHMof1 · 01/11/2006 14:24

We do use real nappies, so thanks for the tip!
