Transition to lumpier foods? Help!

DS is nearly 7m and has been weaning since 17w. hes done fab with smooth purees and eating finger foods such as toast, fruit, biscuits etc. He has been introduced to meats, pasta etc in smooth puree form and now we are trying the lumpier purees. We picked up some Heinz jars which has the tiniest lumps in and he gags something rotten. Is this usual? He eats the sold finger foods happily and even eats normal porridge so I'm not sure what to make of it.

Any suggestions? TIA

Its probably because he is expecting smooth-looking puree off a spoon to be completely smooth and is sucking the food straight in. Finger foods would be a whole different method of eating, so the problem doesn't occur there. Ordinary porridge is also clearly not a smooth puree so he probably takes it into his mouth more like finger food.

I would try going straight to mashed food rather than lumpy puree, or try giving him food the same as you and letting him completely feed himself, BLW style.

If he's eating finger foods there's no need for lumpy purees. That is a step back because ultimately he is supposed to eat the same food as you. He is obviously fine with nor Al food off a spoon too given he eats porridge. I think culture is right the lumpy purée just confused him. If you want ready meals, you can go straight to the 9 or 12 months ones. They would be things like cottage pies, lentil curries etc. You can even buy fresh ones from the fridge section. For example little dish has a nice range. Many supermarket brands have a small children portion too. Obviously at this age you would want to halve or third the serving and freeze the rest. I can't imagine he eats as much as a 4yo!
