I need some help! My ds is nearly one and will only eat pureed food. He will put finger food in his mouth but doesn't successfully eat any of it. The hv is saying I need to stop giving him purees but he won't even entertain mashed or lumpy foods and as he's not actually swallowing any finger foods I'm worried he'll be starving. Any help would be gratefully received

Is he still having breast milk or formula?
If so then he's not starving.

Try babyledweaning.com for ideas and support.

I'd try to relax and make food fun. Sit baby at table when you and DP eat, give him a bit of whatever you're having and enjoy yourselves.

He's breastfed when I'm not at work. He drinks water the rest of the time as does well with a beaker. I'm trying so hard not to get stressed about it but I'm surrounded by people who are all saying how easy weaning is and how much there dc are eating. Is it ok to give him purees along side finger food?

I think your HV has already given you the advice, but it's not what you want to hear. Why not give the no purée thing a try and see?

I am trying the baby led weaning now, was just worrying about him being hungry as not swallowing much if anything. Was just going to give purees as last resort after offering finger food as the meal but I'll just do finger foods for now and see how he goes. Just bit worried cos I do 14 hour shifts and it's a long time to go with out milk if he's not having food

How about a meal that's totally finger food, followed by one that has purees and finger food? A child would not starve himself. The only thing we aren't sure is if he can actually swallow lumpy food. I think the HV is guessing he could, but just too lazy to do it?

They will still test you like this when much older. DD1 is 3yo and she will tell me she wants pasta when we have rice for dinner, and vice versa. I don't cater for her whims. She always have breakfast to fill herself up with weetabix.

I was/ still am in the same boat as you. DS is 14 months.

DS will eat purée no problem, albeit quite chunky puree. He'll eat bananas and sometimes raisin toast, but not much of it actually goes down his throat so I end up giving him baby bolognese, scrambled egg, apple purée etc instead.

A lot of stuff he throws on the floor, it's such a waste!

Sick of hearing about babies the same age eating full roast beef dinner's etc!

purée means puree!

toffeeboffin · 07/03/2015 00:49

Just realised I didn't make any suggestions!

The best way for me is to just put stuff in front of him; Cheerios, toast, bananas, grated cheese. I try and do other stuff whilst he eats/ plays with it, he's very independent and won't be told what to do!

As I say, some of it is swallowed, but I do find myself sweeping stuff up a lot!

Thank you for all your responses. I have completely forgotten how I weaned ds1 it's like being a first time mum again! I've got lots of different foods in for him to try feeding himself see how we get on fingers crossed!!!
