apparently i'm to feed them to the boy whole so he can leanr to 'pinch' with his finger/thumb at the food to pick up instead of grab.

quick Q thou - am I emnt to cut them in half or something cos i'm worried he'll choke or something, and also how much should he have or each - I was thinking just a couple of each to be gettin him along with.

since she developed a pincer grip i give dd frozen petit pois to eat (sometimes actually still frozen if she's got sore teeth) and sultanas.
probably didn't give her them before about 8 months as i don't think she'd have been able to pick them up...
initially i used to bung the raisins in some warm water for ten mins and then squash them between my thumb and forefinger so that i knew the skin was broken on them. now i always have some on us for sitting in cafes etc and i just squash them without soaking. she loves them and they are a brilliant time wasting exercise.
she eats both peas and sultanas (or whatever dried grape thing looks juiciest in the shop) by the bucketload now.

WriggleJiggle · 19/10/2006 19:54

Just a warning on the peas thing. When my dd eats them, they come outmuch the same as they went in. Or is that just my dd

TheBlairAitchProject · 19/10/2006 19:57

nope. barely a dent here too.

SoupDragon · 19/10/2006 20:00

Raisins are amazing though - they come out the other end looking more like grapes as they puff up.

TheBlairAitchProject · 19/10/2006 20:00

THAT's what those are..!

munz · 19/10/2006 20:02

ooh dear! lol - how about sweetcorn? he's 8 months monday.

Sweetcorn - untouched
Bananas - black threads

WriggleJiggle · 19/10/2006 20:18

But sweet corn is worth it as she loves it so much. Just got to time it right so daddy gets that nappy!

well tried a coupple of rasins - stioll grabbing - not fussed about that, not keen on them - tbh think they all ended up on the floor along with the 5/6 baked beans he was given! lol - so guess he doens't like either of those options!

You could try fresh blueberries Munz. Not quite as small as peas/raisins for the grip, but good enough. Went down well with DD for breakfast the last couple of mornings.

munz · 23/10/2006 11:50

thats an idea yes, I assume u just give 3/4 of those as well?

i'm also thinking to try him with pasta/spagehetti (sp) just plain to see how we go with other finger foods. I picture loads a mess and me tearing my hair out! - oh well!

Well I gave DD a handful - I guess about 8 or 9 to start with, but she ate all of those, so I gave her another handful, but she ate all of those, so I gave her another handful......

We are now doing mostly blw though, so she's quite used to picking stuff up and eating it herself.

I personally wouldn't recommend spaghetti as an early finger food - you ideally want things that keep their shape when he picks them up, and spaghetti would just hang, making it hard for him to get to his mouth. Other pasta would allow him to practice his grip, but this is the one thing that Pippa has struggled to eat without any teeth, so if Joey doesn't have any either then don't expect him to eat much if any of it.

Has he had any finger foods before? If not then I'd start with chip shaped bits of boiled/steamed veg - things like carrot or potato, or something like tenderstem broccoli which has a good 'handle' for him to hold on to.

AlfredAitchcock · 23/10/2006 22:42

dd finds fusilli very easy to hold onto, if you're looking for an easier pasta to eat.

hester · 23/10/2006 22:45

And prunes come through looking - really rather like prune puree

Sorry, munz, that doesn't help. Is ds enjoying his food?

munz · 24/10/2006 09:04

yes hester - u can't get into him fast enough! lol. - will email u back as well!

csws - he's got his 2 bottom ones and I thought the top would start this week but touch wood it seems to have calmed down somewhat. we've tried some finger foods - when I started trying foods out he just wouldn't have anything unless it was pureed, now it's anything with small lumps unless it's finger foods he can have a good suck on, I did try just plain mashed foods (mashed well thou) and he turned his nose up every time so guess that's not the option! lol. mainly i've been giving him carrot sticks and toast etc when we have our brekfast/dinner so as to keep him occupied whilst we're eating ours iycwim.

alfred - thanks for the tip, will get some of those, I think I have the tubey ones and perhaps the bow thingy's but that's all.
