Tinned tuna or sardines for 8mth old?

Can you give tinned tuna or sardines (both in spring water) to babies? I remember being told to steer clear of tuna during pregnancy but not sure why & if this also relates to under 1's. I'm trying to come up with some cheap but healthy meals for DS that include some of my store cupboard foods.
Thanks

Hi, I don't know if it's OK for babies, but the reason why you should steer clear of tuna during pregnancy is because it has a high mercury content, also swordfish and shark. Sardines might be OK though. I think I can remember seeing sardines mentioned in my Annabel Karmel book.

Pretty sure that both of these are ok in moderation. DD has had tuna, mackerel and pilchards quite happily (she's 8 months too).

BTW, you don't need to avoid tuna in pregnancy, just limit the amount that you eat to something like 2 tins a week (forget the exact amount - it changed about 2 years ago).

dd has had tinned tuna and liked it. i presumed that because of th emercury issue you couldn't eat it every day. be aware that your child will smell strongly of fish, though, which i found most peculiar.

there is apparently no limit on tinned tuna for children. There is a limit on fresh tuna as it counts as an oily fish.

Oily fish daily limits
