They are quite high in sugar and salt, but otherwise nutritionally excellent, especially in combination with wheat (eg toast, pasta). I gave mine baked beans very occasionally after 1y.

funnily enough i just gave dd (10months)her first baked beans tonight and she wasn't too fussed about them. i had some too, and i think for the first time ever i noticed that they tasted really salty. Franny has a recipe for them which you could search for but it requires molasses which i haven't yet found.

you are making me homesick - baked beans in the usa are nothing compared to british ones....

liath · 09/10/2006 21:21

I used the heinz low sugar low salt ones. They don't contain artificial sweetners.

I buy Whole Earth (they are pricey) which are sweetened with apple juice. When my dd1 was under 18 mo or so I rinsed off the sauce and mashed them, then spread them on toast. We are a vegetarian family with three children under five and as a reasonably healthy convenience food (like when dd2 is about to fall asleep before she has her dinner and we need something in a hurry) they can't be beaten.

Aitch - molasses is what we Scots call treacle, you know the black sticky stuff that Oor Wullie used to put on his bread. It confused me for a long long time too

TheBlairAitchProject · 09/10/2006 22:01

TREACLE!? you are KIDDING me!?! i've searched bloody high and low for molasses for the past four months and there's been treacle in the cupboard the whole time. mawbroon, really? i'm so ashamed...

does anyone have / have link to the bb recipe? like the sound of that a lot...

My mum has just got terrible food poisoning from haricot beans that were undercooked, so if you are going to cook them please make sure they are done properly! (I am such a coward I alwys buy tinned!)

kiskidee · 09/10/2006 22:08

i made franny's baked beans tonight. i made them once before and dh and his mate thinks they are ace. i on the other hand have always hated baked beans - even my own home made.

ps, i only make it now because dd likes em.

here is her recipe, with her comments and all.

Home baked beans

8 oz haricot beans
1 lb toms, skinned and deseeded (I used tinned and it is ok if maybe a little runny)
2 tbsp tom puree
2 tbsp molasses
2 tsp mustard powder
3/4 pint hot stock (that's three quarters, not 3 or 4 )

Soak beans overnight in large bowl covered with cold water. Drain well, put in sauce pan and cover with cold water by at least 2 ins. Bring to boil, skim surface, cover pan and cook at rolling boil for 30 mins. Drain well. Preheat oven to GM 2. Put beans in lge casserole and stir in all remaining ingredients. Mix well. Cover casserole and cook for 2.5 hours. Stir gently and cook for another 35 mins or until tender and sauce thickened. (normally takes up to 4 hours to get really tender and not too runny IME).

Freezes well and is popular with dads as well as children. I normally cook at least double and freeze lots. It has been pointed out to me that with having to cook them for so long, and with baked beans being so cheap, that it is probably cheaper to buy them, but I would far rather have this sort with no salt and no artificial sweeteners. I think baked beans are a truly healthy food but the tinned sort normally have a lot of crap added. These are easy to make and also make the house smell lovely.

PMSL Aitch. Aye, honestly, it's treacle. It is so true that you learn something new every day.
