What does your 7 month old eat?

Can I ask what your 7 month old baby eats?

And how much they have a day?

My just turned 8 month dd has
Breakfast - 3 heaped teaspoons of porridge made with blue milk
Lunch- rice cake with dairylea or a scrambled egg with cheese or toast with goumous or fusili pasta in sauce. Then 2 ice cubes worth of fruit with 2 spoons of Greek yoghurt.
Tea- 2 ice cubes worth of meat ( bolognaise, shredded steak, shredded chicken flavored with a marinade) with 1 ice cube worth of mash and veg or 1 teaspoon of pasta stars. The 2 ice cubes of fruit with 2 spoons of yoghurt.

We're doing traditional weaning

angelopal · 22/10/2014 21:20

We are doing mostly finger food as dd is not a fan of purees and only really eats porridge and yoghurt off a spoon. She tends to have a big breakfast and lunch ant not much in the evening.

Today was toast with dairylea and baby porridge with apple puree.

Lunch was broccoli and cheese muffin with sticks of cucumber and yellow pepper. Followed by yoghurt.

Tea she had some carrot and cheese sauce followed by pineapple.

Other things she eats include eggy bread, lentil wedges, cheese straws, rice cakes, pasta and most fruit and veg. She is not a fan of meat but has chewed on some chicken and gammon steak.

As mostly finger food a lot does end up on the floor but she is eating more of it.

Highlove · 22/10/2014 22:13

We do mainly finger food with some mushy stuff of which I spoon some in and she feeds herself some with loaded spoons.

Breakfast today was cheese on toast and some mango. Lunch was a bit of falafel, couple of strips of pitta dipped in mashed avocado and houmous, cucumber sticks and then some pear chunks, dinner was leftover beef stew - it had pots and veg in the stew so I served as mush, about three ice cubes of it - followed by Greek yoghurt with some homemade purée, probably a couple of tablespoons in all.

As it's mainly finger foods, the amount that goes in varies - the other day we were out and the mum of an 11 month old was in awe of the way my DD polished off at least half a slice if cheese on toast. Another day the whole lot might end up on the floor.

Our 7-month-old ate...erm...milk, mostly! He wasn't really interested in food until just after 7 months.

susiebee46 · 22/10/2014 22:49

Breakfast: couple of spoons of wheetabix, mostly spat out

Lunch: Couple of bits of rice cake with peanut butter. gnawed on some cucumber for ages. sucked on a couple of bits of orange.

Tea: Refused apple puree, sucked on toast fingers with philadelphia.

We've mostly been doing finger foods as he was not keen on being spoon fed. more recently he's tolerated a bit of spoon feeding but it's hard to predict when a spoon will be deemed acceptable. The other day he randomly ate loads of greek yoghurt but every time i've offered it since he looks at me like i'm the worst person in the world!

He's actually swallowing very little and some days he doesn't seem to want anything. I try to offer a variety of things a few times a day and let him choose how much he has and how long mealtimes last.

Writerwannabe83 · 23/10/2014 07:25

Thanks everyone - I just feel so lost.

I know that milk is still the most important factor in their diet so I worry about giving DS too much food and him refusing milk because of it. What he has is pretty poor in comparison to some replies Hmm

Today I'm going to give him some toast and baby porridge for breakfast and then head to ASDA to find some other things to try.

My Jain problem as well is that I'm just so nervous about what I can or can't give him - plus worrying he will choke.

NickyEds · 23/10/2014 13:11

Erm.. weaning is the process of replacing milk with food!!Smile Is your DS still ebf Writer? If he's having around three feed in 24 hours he'll be getting enough milk. My DS has embraced food with gusto and eats LOADS- he now has a full bottle before bed and one in the morning (and occasionally one in the night) and I've been told that's enough. He started dropping milk feeds at around 7 months and he's now 10 months.

The only thing he can't have is honey (botulism risk I think). Cherry tomatoes, grapes and nuts need to be cut up as they are a choking hazard and eggs cooked through. Don't add salt to anything and buy low salt stock/butter/gravy etc for them.

DS has always loved things like fish pie, shepherds pie, stew, curry, boiled fingers of veg, roast veg, bagels with cream cheese, hummus or peanut butter, potato cakes, crumpets, all the fruit I've ever given him has gone down well. He will most likely gag every now and then but their gag reflex is high in their throats so sometimes what seems like a choke is no where near dangerous. Look up first aid for choking if you're nervous.

Remember when he was tiny and it felt like all you did was feed him?? I feel like that now, only it's much messier!!! Bottle, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, bottle.

Writerwannabe83 · 23/10/2014 16:34

Yes he's still breast fed and in a 24 hour period he still has about 6-8 feeds.

He had some baked beans for lunch with a jacket potato and some garlic bread and he seemed to enjoy that.

I've just got back from ASDA and I bought all different bits and bobs to try him with. I know I just need to crack on with it Grin

It does take a bit to get into the swing of it. At first I said to my Dad "We're supposed to give him food now- not just milk, but HUMAN food!!"

Schmoop · 23/10/2014 20:33

My DS is 7.5 months now and I had the same feelings about giving too much food and him not having enough milk (ebf) but I've kind of got over that now. You just need to follow his lead, if he eats loads more than you thought he would, it's normal. If he's taking it slower, that's normal too Smile

DS has 3 meals a day now usually (sometimes lunch is very small or missed as this is the last meal i'm introducing) He's having 4/5 breastfeeds a day. A routine has emerged that works well so that he has a milkfeed an hour before solids.

From what I've read from my own weaning quandaries babies differ vastly in how quickly they take to solids in volumes. As your DS is only 7 months you've only been weaning for a few weeks, there's plenty of time yet. As long as your offering a variety of solids I'm sure he'll get there soon

hollie84 · 23/10/2014 20:51

DS2 is 7.5 months and eats as much as he can Grin

He has 4 bottles a day still.
6oz bottle first thing
Breakfast is usually some porridge and fruit
6oz mid morning
Lunch maybe some toast, a spoonful of beans/scrambled egg, a banana
5oz in the afternoon
Tea spag bol, curry and rice etc, and some greek yoghurt
7oz before bed

Writerwannabe83 · 24/10/2014 09:42

He's had a pouch if fruit purée this morning and a rice cake.

I'm going to give him done toast and beans for his lunch. How important is it to use unsalted butter?? (because I don't have any).

OP posts:
NickyEds · 24/10/2014 12:47

I wouldn't worry too much. Are you using low salt baked beans? Babies under 1 should have a maximum of 1g of salt a day (or 0.4g Sodium) so I just keep an eye on it in general and if he has something a bit salty for lunch I just give him something very low for tea. It's more or less like for yourself- homemade stuff has very little but anything processed will have more. I have started buying low salt butter/gravy etc and anything like baked beans in the low salt version/tuna in water rather than brine. Probably doing me no harm!!

wildstrawberryplace · 24/10/2014 13:09

DS has just turned 7 months.

He has baby porridge for breakfast (the wholegrain kind with bits of fruit in it) I'd say he eats about 2 tablespoons of it (though I always seem to make a big bowl so I always think he's eaten hardly anything). I will also give him pear slices or banana chunks which he'll gnaw on before it all goes on the floor.

Lunch will be toast (unsalted butter) with cream cheese or fruit chunks and some cheese strips. Sometimes rice cakes dipped in fruit puree.

His dinner will be salmon fish fingers with the breadcrumbs removed, or a bit of chicken - he just seems to suck these though. Tried him on a skinned sausage first time last night, he sucked on it and seemed to like it. They were the ones with apple in, didn't seem to high on salt. He's also had baby pasta with mild cheese sauce and veg, "baby" fish pie (cod fillet in white sauce with blended veg and cheese). Omelette strips (again, mostly just sucked). Broccoli florets are very popular with him, and cooked carrot batons. He likes avocado. Sweet potato not so much.

It sounds loads but he really eats very little, I feel like I am clearing mountains of mulched food from the table, high chair and floor every meal time.

wildstrawberryplace · 24/10/2014 13:11

Oh and he has about 6-8 BFs a day (plus Mom's All Night BF Snack Bar Hmm)

Writerwannabe83 · 24/10/2014 19:22

He completely turned his nose up to his tea. He accepted the first two spoonfuls but then dribbled it all out. His mouth was then firmly clamped shut!!

OP posts:
NickyEds · 24/10/2014 21:29

Oh dear!! That's you told then isn't itGrin Do not feed me mother!

zonkmeister · 28/10/2014 21:10

Thanks mumsnetters! - I've spent all day worrying about my DD2's (8 months) feeding habits - feel like such a weaning failure as DD1 would eat pretty much anything and tried to spoon feed herself from day1. dD2 won't eat anything but porridge or fruit yoghurt off a spoon, won't go near meat unless its spag Bol and even then gets frustrated if the pasta slides out of her hands, but still won't let me touch it. This week she has refused my home made pumpkin soup (delicious!), homemade lamb tagine (delicious!) home made spag bol (delicious!) I'm so bad at blw I lose faith and always end the meal trying to shove an Ella's kitchen veg pouch down her (to be fair, she's normally screaming with hunger). All these posts are very reassuring though, here was today's meal plan, god only knows what I will feed her tomorrow:

Early am: bf
Breakfast: porridge or fruit yoghurt
Mid morning: bf - though I think she might want to drop this
Nap (if I'm lucky)
Lunch: penne with Bolognese followed by a satsuma - then half a veg pouch!
Dinner: breastfeed as she had a temperature and didn't want solids

She is teething, which doesn't help, but she seems to survive on pitta bread, porridge and Ella's kitchen... Ideas and advice soooo welcome!

MummyPig24 · 29/10/2014 06:43

Dc3 is 7.5 months.

Breakfast: 3 dessert spoons of readybrek with milk and half a fruit pot. Or toast and banana, or eggy bread, or pancakes.

Lunch: sandwich (1 slice) with Philadelphia or peanut butter, or pitta and homous or pasta. Usually some veg sticks and Greek yogurt with fruit.

Dinner: whatever we have, cottage pie, roast dinner, chicken wraps, meatballs with pasta. He has a good go at everything.

MummyPig24 · 29/10/2014 06:44

He has 4 or 5 breastfeeds a day and 1 or 2 during the night.
