Constipation

DS is now 7 months and basically since starting weaning (at 6 months) I think he has been constipated. He is going mostly everyday but when he does go it's firm like a playdoh consistency and he's having to force. Sometimes he forces and nothing comes out. He's not upset but I don't think this is normal? or is it?

He was EBF until 6 months and I've mostly been giving finger foods other than porridge for breakfast which I spoon feed him. He's been having a wide variety of finger foods such as fruit, veg, pasta, bread, omelette.

Is it because I've taken it too fast? Should I go back to milk and start again or just go back to fruit? He's still taking his normal breastfeeds and has water in a sippy cup with meals but will only take a few sips

constipation is when it is dry and hard. Playdoh consistency sounds ok to me

Thanks for replying. It's not hard/dry, definately squishable. It just seemed such a drastic change considering he's mostly feeding himself.
Think I over-googled it!

Can I jump in and ask a relate Q? I thought the same about my DS, he's been on solids 2 wks and strains and grunts but poo is play doh like. But, he is only pooing once a week. He's had times like this before and as never ever gone every day (ebf) I just thought with solids on top of milk he'd need a clear out a bit more often. What do you think? Is once a week ish still ok? ( once a week he does about 4 poos in one day!)

My dd did get constipated - she would stop going daily then gradually it got harder. Once I had to "help" her

From then on I reined back what I fed her and let her diy. Eggs, bread, rice, apples are all terrible for getting my DCs bunged up even in seemingly small amounts! Nectarines were good at clearing them out Grin

My then-BF baby was slow to get drinking water from a cup. Likewise she'd only have a few sips at a time. I found by offering the cup directly to her (sometimes literally putting it to her lips) frequently during the meal, she would take a few sips each time and those added up through the meal to a good quantity. She got there in the end and is now very good at asking for her cup (by pointing/reaching) when thirsty.

I think perhaps I went abit heavy on the stodgey foods and I've just given him allsorts on the highchair tray over the last month so it's hard to know exactly what foods it is that's had an effect.

He's had a lovely pastey nappy this evening and I've avoided carby stodge the last couple of days so I think I'll reintroduce at a slower pace.

ilovetosleep my DS has always gone once a dayish so the frequency of his poos hasn't changed. HTH

I'll try to get more water into him too. I do guide the cup to his mouth a lot as he prefers to water the carpet if I don't
